Thousands clean Stanislaus County in weekend effort
Thousands of volunteers tackled Stanislaus County roadways gathering 600 to 700 tons of litter in a four hour sweep along 1837 miles of highways and rural roads. Paul Philbin led the effort with cooperation from rubbish firms and Sierra Club members. County officials called it a complete success and predicted the county would be the cleanest in California by month’s end.

Grape pickers at two Coachella Valley ranches voted 152 to 2 for representation by the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee. Ventura County Judge and Attorney Feared Drowned in Sailboat Crash
A search continued for Superior Court Judge Philip West and attorney Hugh Gallagher missing since Saturday after their 21 foot sailboat split on rocks near Anacapa Island. Douglas Diehl, the third diver, swam ashore at Frenchy’s Cove and told of life jackets and a large wave that flipped the boat, with West and Gallagher last seen swimming against a current. Diehl, 28, deputy marshal, aided in the search as Coast Guard cutters and helicopters joined in at daybreak. West, 45, had been appointed to the Ventura County Superior Court last December by Gov. Reagan. Gallagher, 43, a prominent Santa Paula attorney. Diehl reported the two men disappeared around a cove point while trying to reach shore.
