Nixon urges federal standards for unemployment pay and strike ban

President Nixon asked Congress to set federal rules for unemployment compensation at least half the worker’s weekly pay and extend coverage to about 635,000 farm hands. He urged amending the Federal Unemployment Tax Act to ban benefits to strikers and to those nonstrikers harmed by disputes, citing cost impacts on state funds and employer taxes.

Navy Commander Charles Everett Southwick recounted his six year captivity after his F 4 dive over Than Wah, Vietnam, on May 19, 1967. He described torture, interogation, and the local population’s mood, ending with a faith that his country would rescue him.

Mississippi River floods Delta plantation country

The Mississippi River reached historic highs in Mississippi's Delta region forcing thousands to flee homes and inundating a 9,800 acre plantation near Holly Bluff.
