Aaron Wins Masters in Shootout After Card Error

Tommy Aaron claimed the Masters title with a 5 under par 283, beating J C Snead by one stroke as Jack Nicklaus and others trailed. A mistaken score by Aaron's playing partner Johnny Miller briefly jeopardized the win when a par 5 on the 13th was recorded as a birdie 4, later corrected before signing.

Aparicio son guarded after Venezuela extortion threats

Luis Aparicio says his 15 year old son Luis is under 24 hour police guard in Maracaibo after extortion threats. The Boston Red Sox shortstop, 38, said he learned of the danger about a week ago while at spring training in Florida. He noted police have not identified suspects and promises his son’s safety as he remains with the team during a road trip.

Stegman Shines as Arizona Opens Western Conf

Stegman, a Lompoc High graduate who turned down a major league offer, starts in center field for Arizona in the Western Athletic Conference opener. He had a .300 batting average with 24 hits in 80 at bats over 28 games before league play, plus 14 RBIs, 21 runs, three doubles, a homer, four steals, 19 walks, and no errors. Tom Harmon, a 1970 Lompoc grad, is a reserve catcher for Arizona, batting .154 in five games. Matt Goodrich of Hancock and ex-Cong pitcher Dennis Hall also feature in the regional baseball notes.
