Holy Land sees massive Easter pilgrimage as Passover begins
About 50,000 tourists flock to Jerusalem for Christian Good Friday rites and Passover, with 2,000 Christians retracing Jesus’ steps along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre while Jews begin an eight day festival marking deliverance from Egypt. Soviet Jewish immigrants arrive as holiday crowds swell, and Israel reports its busiest tourist influx since 1967. Hotels are fully booked and matzoth factories work overtime to meet demand.
