Daley Wins Fifth Chicago Mayoral Term in Landslide

Richard J. Daley secured a record fifth term with about 70 percent of the vote or 735,787 to 318,059 after all precincts counted. He carried 48 of 50 wards, losing two narrowly. Friedman, a Democrat turned independent, ran a strong challenge against Daley’s machine through a campaign demanding end to bossism and mismanagement.

Nevada bill to allow casino debt collection dies

A Nevada legislative committee killed a bill allowing casino owners to collect gambling debts. Las Vegas operators argued losses of about 40 million annually from unpaid IOUs.
