Voters in two municipal elections added two black mayors to the national count. Warren Widener won Berkeley California by a slim margin amid a heated race and possible recount. James E Williams Sr won East St Louis Illinois as a political newcomer. Oklahoma City elected Patience Latting as the nation's largest city with a woman mayor by about ten thousand votes, and Chicago re elected Richard J Daley to his fifth four year term by a margin exceeding four hundred thousand. Berkeley election featured a narrow victory and a vote on a three department police plan that was defeated. Widener proposed a community control alternative. Sixteen councils seats opened, three radar coalition backed candidates won.

Two Yugoslavs attack Yugoslav embassy in Stockholm
Two Yugoslavs shouted Long Live a Free Croatia fired at the Yugoslav embassy in Stockholm wounding ambassador Vladimir Rolovic aged 55 and his secretary Mira Stempha aged 58. Both were listed in very critical condition as doctors attempted to remove bullets. Stempha was shot in the chest.
