Apollo may space color on Apollo 10 moon flight

UPI reports Apollo 10 astronauts may broadcast the first live color telecasts from a manned spacecraft during May moon orbit. George Low says color pictures of Earth could be fed worldwide, with receive stations in Spain and California, while Stafford Young and Cernan may also view TV inside the capsule using a small monochrome monitor.

Color camera ready for Apollo 10 moon mission

Low said a breakthrough allows three black and white images to be converted into color at a ground station. A 50 50 chance the system can be delivered and tested in time for Apollo 10 launching May 18. Westinghouse must deliver three color cameras by May 1 or risk Apollo 12 in November.

County supervisors push excusal rule for smog days

Los Angeles officials consider a medical proposal to excuse students from strenuous indoor and outdoor activities when smog alerts are triggered. The Los Angeles County Medical Society urged release of elementary and high school pupils at ozone levels of .35 ppm, with Stage One alerts at .50 ppm.

Mexican mine disaster claims hundreds of workers

In Barroterran Mexico officials feared 156 miners were killed when explosions and gas collapsed shafts 2 and 3 at Altos Hornos mine. By Tuesday 21 bodies recovered and 135 men still missing as rescue workers faced toxic air and deep, echoing tunnels. The tragedy touched many families in the town where many residents work in the mines.

Alioto calls for calm as probe into fatal shooting continues
