Santa Barbara County may review agricultural preserve program
The Santa Barbara County board signals a thorough review of its agricultural preserve program with possible changes to criteria and standards. Third District Supervisor Daniel G. Grant urges evaluation after the Planning Commission declined two north county preserve applications showing non prime land. The cases by Maria Foxen Quintana and Joseph Aguirre, and Gertrude Reyes and Eugene Wegis were continued until May 5 pending planning and committee reports. concludes that tax concessions and rural production motives drive preserve filings as non-prime land forms the bulk of acreage nearing 200000 acres.

Road Commissioner Leland Steward notes county costs to upgrade and maintain these segments could be saved with a legislative amendment, with state reimbursement a fallback if it fails.
