The California sales tax rose to 6 cents on the dollar statewide at 12:01 a.m. with Bay Area counties San Francisco Alameda and Contra Costa charging 62 cents. A $3,500 car now carries $210 in tax and a $20 pair of shoes costs $21.20. The levy funds property tax relief and followed a six month suspension to absorb a $826 million surplus.
