A Tipton township column notes Merriman Bishop and Rebecca Leedy wed at Rebecca’s mother’s home with Rev Ellis officiating. The piece mocks social scandal, local school scenes at Buckwheat, inventive cures, and village misadventures including broken buggies, thefts, and pranks in Jefferson and Lake Cicott areas.
Snow blankets Lake Chott as a smooth icy sheet invites sleighing. A Christmas shooting match passed quietly though some were badly shot in the neck with Pat’s gun. A local troublemaker shrugs off, planning to join the Murphies after a misadventure with eggs. Schools closed for holidays. Henry Banta prepares to move to Kansas with his family. La Barron accompanies him. Mr. Banta once faced grasshopper kicks. Shooting matches grow in the area. E T Stevens and J Wiley mentioned with local trades and blooming strawberry vines.
In ten days hogs killed exceed the prior tempo as cold weather and rough roads hinder travel. The Murphy meeting at Shiloh drew smaller attendance than earlier sessions. Mrs. Rebecca Tucker widow of Michael Packer died June 8 1878 aged 69 years five months nine days after a life of faith and service. Funeral held at Webb Chapel with burial at Hasper's graveyard. Noble Sp. Alexander died January 10 1878.
Weather changes in Bethlehem bring a fall of snow that protects the wheat crop. Health generally good in the community.
Prices paid last week stood at 350 and 370 dollars per hundred for Bethlehem hogs. Messrs Grable and Yantis shipped three car loads to Chicago last Thursday night and came out ahead. The Teachers Institute meets on the second Saturday each month. Sheriff Loutham searched the huckleberry marsh area for parties who allegedly borrowed items from Mr Ganson while his family was away. After a long absence we report a spelling school at Buck wheat school-house with Miss Nelia Tucker as champion. News covers weddings, visits, Christmas gifts, church activities, lodge installations, and a frigid January scene in Jackson Township dated January 8 1873.
A Walton chronicle notes neighbors bidding adieu to Tipton Lowmpanip, debates over geology and faith, and a rabbit hunt by Jan Shafer. It mentions Michael Wendling owning fifty pugs, a wedding announcement, a sermon on a stranger in a strange land, a marshall resignation, and J A Forgueran moving to lead Walton stock yards.
Mr G G Thomas killed fifteen head of boys averaging nearly four hundred pounds net. Mart W Jamison of Logansport visited Harrison. Protracted meeting at Zion began Jan 6 and lasts three to four weeks. Rev T H McKee is pastor. Thomas Backus Jr plans to improve his farm with a new barn next spring. Monthly school data for Good Hope in Boone township shows 31 pupils enrolled and 25 in average daily attendance. Perfect attendance includes Elmore Kistler Reuben Burton James Gangloff Henry Kistler Thomas Burton Oska Vernon Elizabeth Holmes Larkin Hammon William Vernon Henry Gangloff and Annie Burton. Roll of Honor lists names with high marks such as Annie Burton 100 and Elizabeth Holmes 99.
At a school house in Deer Creek district No 3 on January 9 1873 Thomas Newport chaired a road meeting with T Davis as secretary. The vote chose the meridian line between Logansport and Young America as the proposed road route. One married woman and her baby attended. wives may build roads if husbands and sons fail. Jan 10 1878.
Fragments praise Dr Bull's Baby Syrup and Dr Bull's Couch Syrup priced at 25 cents at drug stores. Notices cover funerals, marriages, and local real estate sales with brief mentions of individuals such as Mrs Mary Tucker and Mr Martin E Lux and Anna C Hamaker.
