George P. Herrick a 53 year old farmer living six miles south of the city in Washington town died this morning in his barn while putting a halter on a horse. An inquest is planned for tomorrow as Dr. Nelson and Dr. Holloway investigate the unexplained death. He is survived by a widow and three children.
In a special session the county council rejected James Shinn’s requisition for 1911 extra clerk hire and related years, while approving various county expenses including $75 for printing the state v Blocher brief. The panel also cut Gus Gleitze per diem from $900 to $375 and approved several department lines. A new daughter arrived to Panhandle yard conductor James Navin and wife at 1418 George Street.
The Sunday School Athletic League of Logansport organized last night at the Y M C A to foster character through athletics and Sunday school attendance. Eleven-year-olds through twelve-year-olds may join. ten-cent registration per player. transfers allowed only for residence changes. trophies and a pennant reward the winners.
A. L. Bond, a Vincennes resident and Culver academy student visiting the area, fell yesterday and fractured his wrist. Initial impression of a sprain gave way to X ray confirmation, and the fracture was reduced last evening by Dr. J. P. Hetherington.
W H Bear of Jefferson Township brought June peaches into the city, saying the tree grew on his farm near Lake Cicott. He notes the fruit is the first ripe peach he has seen in June and that the nursery gave him an unnamed peach variety.
Edward Hines testified before the investigating committee that President Taft and Senators Penrose and Aldrich urged his support for Senator Lorimer. The remarks came as part of Hines' testimony in Washington on June 29.
Fulton business men organize a large Fourth of July program featuring a sixteen mile motorcycle race a boys bicycle race a free for all masquerade on horseback an automobile parade with best decorated auto prize a ball game baby show foot races and more. Evening events include a band concert by the Citizens' band of Rochester and an illuminated parade with Hon George W Rentschler coordinating activities.
Members of the Country club announce a full day of events led by entertainment chair Claude Wise. A golf tournament obstacle races and a pie eating contest will highlight daytime activities with a dance and fireworks to close the evening program.
Sunday school picnic at Market Street M. E. church in Spencer park featured a five inning baseball game Captain Rev W T Arnold pitched and batted well collecting three hits and two scores The day also included races with multiple winners led by John Reed Earl Hite Way Sims and Rev Arnold in various divisions
P J Choinard leads a company proposing a six story hotel in Lafayette. They secured a ninety nine year lease on the Leopold Cryfus block on Main street for the new building valued at 50140 dollars.
Mark DuBois and Joseph Pawelski were being taken to Plainfield reformatory by F. R. Zacharek when DuBois escaped yesterday. He fled via a train toilet and climbed to the top of the car as police in South Bend issued a description of the boy.
James Shinn, county recorder, received a hypodermic injection by Dr. J. W. Stewart this morning to relieve pain. Shinn became delirious after returning to his office and was later taken home as his condition grew critical. Attempts to locate the responsible doctor delayed treatment.
James A. Wilson formerly of this city was struck and instantly killed in Chicago on Monday by a Northwestern passenger train. He was painting bridges and helping move a hand car on the track when the train arrived. His widow formerly lived at Eighth and North Street. The funeral took place from the home of his sister Mrs. A W Bloom in Chicago, with another sister Mrs. Be. C. Rumnell residing here.
The Labor day arrangements committee met with I A Battenburg, head of the street car system, to arrange transportation to Spencer park for the event. A busy program is planned with races for all ages a baby show and a balloon ascent. Other committees will report after their upcoming meeting.
An accident at the Seventeenth and Broadway intersection near 11 o clock involved two touring cars. Both cars were moving slowly, one north on Seventeenth and the other east on Broadway, with minor damage and no serious injuries reported.
The Rev. Stuart MacArthur, recently elected president of the Baptist World Alliance, may resign from Calvary Church in New York to study religious conditions in Russia.
J. S. Tuttle of the National Tea Company is critically ill at home from brain congestion blamed on the heat. He worked in the sun all day Friday and has been ill since, breaking down yesterday.
Frank Shaffer confined to his home near the Star theatre in grave condition after a fourth stroke. He has partially regained speech but his left side remains totally paralyzed and physicians hold little hope for recovery.
Thomas Gillespie announces a vacation to Chicago with stops along Lake Michigan. He will visit multiple shoreline points, enjoying the regional sights and leisure activities during the trip.
Marion Indiana crouches for a grand Fourth of July welcome as President Taft is expected to visit. Local preparations include receptions, speeches by State Senator Shively and others, and a festive atmosphere across the city with crowds, decorations, and organized hospitality. The event is billed as a prelude to Taft’s Indianapolis visit and a defining moment for Marion.
Carl Stansberry of Jewel Howard county survived a severe car accident a mile north of Galveston. He was thought to be near death by doctors Z A Loop and Miller but woke, walked unaided to the interurban, and returned home. Bishop survived. two companions were shaken and left the car earlier.
The Board of Police Commissioners will meet tomorrow night to fill the vacancy from Don Richeson’s resignation. George Graham, former police chief, may be appointed successor though board members had not decided. Graham has not applied for a patrolman position. his supporters press for appointment. Since leaving office, he has been selling Texas and western lands amid a fading land boom.
Rev. F A Reichelderfer of Topeka Ind reports from the North Indiana M E church Kokomo conference that Logansport ranks high. The city’s church property is valued at 612285, Broadway M E at 76000, Market Street M E has 250 junior league members, and the district totals 12201 members—the largest among districts.
