A terrific blast at a large Flint Michigan filling station killed one man and sent 11 people to area hospitals with three expected to die. A backfire from a car is believed to have ignited a pump, igniting the blaze as flames and smoke engulfed the site.
Paris deputies approve devaluation of the franc by one quarter to one third tying it to the pound and dollar. The measure reduces gold content, is sent to the Senate, with gold import export banned by decree. Blum frames the move as part of social reform and cites Roosevelt's recovery efforts. Vincent Auriol and the finance committee advance the bill.
Boston reported Admiral William Sowden Sims died aged 77. A national funeral plan reserved a full naval honors ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, with Taps to be played. He famously declined the Distinguished Service Medal in 1919, saying it was awarded to others unwisely.
Detroit jurors convict nine men in the Black Legion kidnaping and murder of Charles A. Poole on May 12. Seven found guilty of first degree murder and two of second degree murder. Hershell Gill’s fate rests with the jury. the tenth defendant was Lun enone.
Governor Alf Landon declared there would be no slackening in the campaign and outlined an aggressive schedule. He announced trips to Chicago on Oct 9, Cleveland Oct 12, and Detroit Oct 14, following a 1,600 mile trek through Missouri Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin and Illinois to rally for the 78 electoral votes.
Miss Kate Rechenwaldt aged 80 died suddenly at her N Walnut Street home at 2 PM after a heart attack. Born in Hocking County she moved to the residence at age three and lived there 77 years with siblings Jacob and Mrs Wm Lytle of Columbus. Funeral plans handled by Roberts Funeral Home.
The German airship Hin denburg crossed from east to west of the North Atlantic, dropped mooring lines at Lakehurst Naval Air Station at 5:54 AM, and was secured twelve minutes later. The event marks another milestone in transatlantic zeppelin flights with the airship’s arrival at Lakehurst in New Jersey.
Powerful militarist leaders from the army and navy urged drastic administrative reforms in Tokyo. They demanded a cabinet level combined control board to form national policy with a minister without portfolio and warned Premier Hirota may face resignation if the plan is rejected, risking the cabinet's fall.

Moor Vehicles Registrar Frank West extended the license issuance period from October 1 to November 1. He noted that less than 70 percent of registered motorists have been issued licenses and sent the count and directive in a letter to police officials.
Jack Baker son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Baker of N Market entered Ohio State University this week enrolled in the College of Law. He completed pre law training at Ohio University where he was president of the Junior Class last year.
Treasury law enforcement agencies staged a nationwide offensive with 2500 agents, arresting nearly 400 narcotics suspects and seizing hundreds of illicit stills. The operation targeted peddling of narcotics and liquor law violations, involving the narcotic bureau, alcohol tax unit, coast guard, customs and other agencies in a coordinated cleanup.
Fifty federal agents nationwide conducted a crackdown on liquor law and narcotics violations. In Cleveland 39 people were arrested. In Toledo eight men and two women faced trial after pleading innocent to Harrison Narcotic Act charges. Ohio Michigan district reports 35 stills and 56 arrests. no raids in Cincinnati or Columbus areas.
County Superintendent J W Coleman reports the State Department of Education has reversed its stance and will reopen Mound Crossing School. He traveled to Columbus to seek retention of the first six grades, but was refused. The school closure had raised truancy as parents kept children from South Perry.

In Marshfield Oregon on September 29 AP reports a cooling sea fog and dying east wind slowed wildfires that had devastated Bandon and scorched 400 homes and much of the town. Nine deaths and about 3 million dollars in damage were initially tallied as observers forecast escape for remaining towns.
Ohio Gov. Martin L. Davey accused Atty. Gen. John W. Bricker of allowing excessive attorney fees in closed banking liquidations. Bricker fired back at rising state government expenses, alleging Democratic mismanagement. Davey said big payoffs went to political lawyers funding Bricker’s campaign.
New York manager Joe McCarthy named Charles Red Ruffing the burly right hander to start the opening game against the Giants at the Polo Grounds tomorrow. Carl Hubbell, a great southpaw, will pitch for the Giants.
Campbell Ohio AP reports Memorial High School students protested as two secret sessions failed to break a 3 to 2 deadlock on reinstating Michael Graban. Superintendent A B refused reinstatement. a fifth member was absent. A late meeting was planned for 8:30 p m in the high school auditorium as about 500 gathered outside. Elsewhere the mayor said no more tear gas would be used on students after yesterday’s dispersal following a bombing scare.
First earth is moved as steam shovels begin work in Perry County under W J Fene chief engineer United States Bureau of Mines. The Hocking County unit starts today with 24 men clearing Lost Hollow, cutting off the fire neck. Ditches and entries will be dug through the coal seam in three spots and later filled with non combustible material. When fully underway the project will employ nearly 300 workers, about 100 from Hocking County.
