Assistant Fire Chief Gerald McLaughlin began general repairs on the Logan Fire Department pumper on Wednesday. The work will condition the vehicle, fix brakes, and overhaul the motor so the department has two efficient firefighting units ready for emergencies.
Howard Cook assistant supervisor Wayne National Forest warned squirrel hunters Thursday to avoid cigarettes matches and pipes on national forest lands. He cited heavy leaf growth and extreme dryness raising fire risk and urged extreme caution after several minor blazes in the Nelsonville district Hocking County.
A veteran postal worker recalls the shift from horse-drawn carts to motorized Rural Free Delivery, noting safer, faster routes. He describes early carts with charcoal stoves and fuel from fence rails, plus frequent rollovers on rough roads that forced carriers to fight fires to survive.

Raymond Myers of Canton Ohio and Bert King of Pittsburgh were held for the grand jury after pleading guilty to robbing McKinley Turner at a Winchester filling station last week. Virginia Brandy of Akron Ohio, arrested with them, was held as a material witness and pleaded innocent. She escaped from the Marysville Ohio reformatory June 19 with Velma West and two other inmates.
Thousands of people claiming to be Americans seek entry into the United States from war torn Europe as the westbound flow slows. Officials say entrants must prove current American citizenship. many were naturalized before abandoning U S residence during hard years.
The Commerce Department reports Bata Shoe Company broadens world-wide operations after Germany annexed Czechoslovakia. Germany opens markets to Bata, easing orders for domestic producers and aiding expansion of Bata's export trade. The Reich also supports Bata’s growing influence on Germany's foreign trade.
In Washington the opponents of the administration neutrality bill chose not to delay the Senate Foreign Relations Committee vote today. The panel was expected to approve promptly at 10 30 A M EST. Debate in the Senate will begin Monday after lawmakers study the measure to repeal the arms embargo and adopt a cash and carry system for wartime trade.

Charles Jefferson 29 was convicted of first degree murder for slaying 17 year old Frances Dunn near Boca Raton last August 8. A circuit court jury found him guilty of luring two Miami girls with promises of fame and killing one, making the death penalty mandatory. Jefferson hopes a supreme court appeal can avert execution.
