Fog Helps Curb Fires In California

Fog aided firefighters in the Santa Barbara blaze that began Tuesday, with 2,000 men on a 20 mile front. The fire scorched 88,000 acres, destroyed 78 homes, caused about 3.5 million dollars in damage, and one man was killed. The Santa Ynez Range battles continued amid zero visibility fog.

Missionary Linotype Study in Ohio Ends Return Plans Congo

Kenneth Wicklund a Protestant missionary from Harris Minnesota studied at the Ohio Linotype School in Logan before planning to return to Leopoldville Congo in December to train Congolaise personnel on the linotype. He first went to the Congo in 1955 and recent term lasted two years directing Leco book stores and a bookmobile.

Dope Peddler Blasted With Long Prison Term

Bernard Napoli, 21, was sentenced by Acting Justice Aaron F. Goldstein in Mineola to a minimum of 63 years for narcotics distribution. He received 7 to 15 years on nine counts, to run consecutively, with the judge lamenting the lack of death penalty for such crimes.

Gore Hunter Shot In Head In Hunting Accident

A Gore resident, Stanley Norris, 33, was in satisfactory condition after a hunting accident Friday afternoon. He received emergency care at Hocking Valley Hospital and was moved to University Hospital, Columbus, with injuries around the left eye and face. The shooting occurred near Gore Greendale Road when Clifford Proctor fired at what he thought was a groundhog.

Ohio Senators Vote on Appalachian Development Bill

The measure passed the Senate 45 to 13 with Ohio not voting. Senator Young was campaigning for reelection and Lausche opposed the bill in spirit though marked as not voting. The plan spans 24 counties in Appalachia and centers on a proposed Cincinnati to Steubenville highway. Ohio expects a five year share of roughly 140 to 150 million from a one billion federal program, with state and federal funds to finance the Appalachian Way highway project.
