Creswell England September 26 a raging underground fire trapped and killed at least 80 men. About 120 escaped on hands and knees as rescuers abandoned the burning section after nine hours. Sir Hubert Houldsworth announced the official toll and described intense heat and foul air in the affected mine.

Drury, 48, a former police lieutenant, was killed in a garage shooting after backing his Cadillac in. Marvin J. Bas, 45, an attorney digging up syndicate information for a sheriff candidate, was shot on a northwest side street after a struggle.
