South Vietnam fired 105mm howitzers into Cambodia to silence Viet Cong gunners after attacks on Phuoc Tan outpost. U.S. bombers dropped 750 tons along the frontier while a Skyhawk and a helicopter were lost in separate actions.
The U.N. General Assembly opens its 23rd session as the United States protests to secretary general U Thant over Vietnam and weighs a veto on raising the Czechoslovakia issue. Thant proposes a resolution calling for an end to bombing in North Vietnam.
Chicago judge warned Zsa Zsa Gabor she could be jailed if she fails to appear for a deposition in a $1 million lawsuit filed by Leo Durocher. The suit alleges use of Durocher's name in a television commercial in breach of contract. Durocher reportedly needs better pitching rather than publicity. The Cubs were in a three way tie for fourth in the National League.
Army sergeant S. S g t James O Williams, 23, from Detroit, was reported killed in Vietnam but then found alive. He arrived on 30 day leave in Detroit with about 50 relatives. Army mixed up his status with another man in the 11th Infantry Brigade and ordered him to Ft Bliss Texas.
Army troops seized the Santo Tomas Vocational School after an all night battle that left at least three dead and hundreds wounded among students riot police. Rioting spread to nearby districts as clashes continued with snipers firing on police and residents condemning the violence amid Olympic Games uncertainty.
As the seventh day of unrest continues in Mexico City a government spokesman denies martial law rumors amid fears Diaz Ordaz could declare it. The Santo Tomas Vocational School becomes the focal point of clashes with police and snipers between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Roughly 3000 students and adult agitators join the gun battle from rooftops and streets while 1500 officers try to restore order.
The plan would declare no Supreme Court vacancy while Chief Justice Warren serves, preempting Fortas challenges. The measure would be a Senate resolution backed by White House awareness, aiming to prevent Warren’s resignation and Fortas’s nomination from proceeding this year.
The F H Brewer Co of Lancaster began blacktopping Front Street after curb repairs. Work progresses from Culver to Mulberry, then Mulberry to Gallagher Avenue, and finally Gallagher to Hunter Street with two coats planned. If weather allows, Front Street should finish this week and N Market Street from Hunter to Oak Grove Cemetery next week.

Inductees received New Testaments from the Gideon International Bible Society and gilt boxes from the Logan Adult Education Club.
Hospital trustees interviewed a second architect Earl C Hayes of Portsmouth from Earl C Hayes & Associates about a proposed county health services center addition to Hocking Valley Community Hospital. The plan includes 50 beds for extended and nursing care and space for the health department and agencies. Robert McKinley presented a financial report showing August losses from medicare write offs and IRS back taxes but noted gains and a reduced payables total indicating improving indebtedness.

In New Orleans police deploy women partners in some patrols despite 15 policemen wives opposing female partners. Supt. A series of blasts at the Atlantic Richfield Co refinery in Port Arthur Texas caused a prolonged fire injuring three men and forcing evacuation of nearby Fairlea and Winnwood housing additions. Firefighters contained the blaze by dawn though heat set four houses ablaze across the street and destroyed three cars. Police reported concern about possible chlorine gas release prompting evacuations.
The Navy will cut 2,400 civilian jobs at 15 research laboratories as part of a Pentagon cost-saving drive. About 1,900 will be fired with 500 eliminated through attrition, saving roughly 12 million dollars in the current budget year.
