A dynamite laden truck and a Torreon to Chihuahua train collided near Torreon triggering a massive explosion that killed more than 40 people and left over 150 injured. The blast created a large crater, wrecked the line, and flattened nearby homes as rescuers feared the toll could rise to 70.
S. O. Liming, superintendent of Laurelville schools, was elected president of the Hocking County Teachers Association at the annual meeting yesterday at Logan Evangelical United Brethren Church. Fred Good was chosen vice president, Mrs. Juanita Bailey secretary, and Mrs. Viola Hartman treasurer. Delegates were named to the Ohio Education Association and the Southeastern Ohio Teachers Association state and district meetings with alternates listed.
BESSEMER AL. E L McClain 31 renewed a one man picket line at Pullman Standard after a dispute with a coworker led to his discharge. His wife and two of his four children helped, the plant closed by Thursday, and U S Workers of America called the stoppage illegal while McClain remains steadfast.

An all white jury in Mississippi acquitted Roy Bryant and J W Milam of murder in the death of 14 year old Emmett Till. Two area men Virgil Howard Edwards aged 30 of Nelsonville and Luther Luke Sowards aged 35 of New Marsh were arrested by Wellston police and charged with theft of mine equipment from the Joe Roman mine. A heavily loaded car on Lake Alma Road prompted a stop at 2 55 am leading to custody transfers to the Athens County sheriff.
