Moscow had said Gottwald was vacationing in the Crimea. Diplomats in Washington interpret these absences as possible signs of a Soviet satellite leaders meeting.

Explosions in two North African communities killed 38 people and wounded 147. In Laghouat Algeria a blast killed 19 and wounded 100, 20 seriously. In Cairo's Jewish quarter a blast killed 19 and injured 47. The Algerian disaster followed a collision of two French army trucks loaded with explosives. Fires destroyed most of the Laghouat community with damage near $1 million.
Fairfield County grand jury named 27 persons in secret indictments after probing gambling and stolen Swift meat. It urged Mayor Fred Von Stein and Police Chief Samuel Hutsler be cited for gross neglect and condoning gambling, while noting 53 witnesses were questioned.
In Tiffin Ohio on September 23 a widowed mother, Rita Smith, 24, sent a $250 check to Mrs. Orville Taylor, widow of a truck driver slain by two ex convicts. The case connects to Robert Mary Daniels, 24, of Columbus, convicted for the slayings of John E Niebel and his wife, two days before Smith and Taylor were killed. Daniels faces sentence for the Mansfield reformatory farm superintendent and others.
