Berlin officials dismissed the British report of a refugee ship sunk 600 miles out to sea with 298 dead as a tear jerker aimed at forcing U.S. entry. Survivors spoke of children singing as the ship went down, many victims from London's bombed east end.

A collection of 30 enlarged photos by amateur photographers who visited Hocking Hills in July is on display in the Southern Hotel lobby in Columbus. James D. Wells, Logan Chamber of Commerce manager, placed the exhibit Monday. Many photos feature models posed against natural park backgrounds.
The well known Murray resident Doc Madden appears to be the sole casualty of a Saturday Democratic campaign rally in Logan drawing a large crowd. He reportedly spoke with a friend about Martin L. Davey’s speech when a Republican-armed fly swatter struck his upper lip. Madden wore a “Davey patch” on Monday in Logan.
James Lorson, returning from Louisville on a Saturday trip, admired a field of harvested tobacco and gave Dave Milne a display of fresh tobacco leaves for his shop. Lorson said he could not resist the temptation.

In Hillsborough California baby Marc de Tristan Jr rests safely with his family while Federal agents hold alleged kidnapper Wilhelm Jakob Muhlenbroich in a secret location. Muhlenbroich confessed to abducting the child, who was found after a staged rescue in El Dorado County. Authorities note state jurisdiction and the case could bring several sensational revelations at trial.
Monday marked the official start of autumn with clear skies and warm temperatures dipping slightly from the prior weekend. Meteorologists warned of tropical disturbances moving up the Mississippi Valley bringing cooler, rainy conditions by week’s end, just as the Hocking County fair opens Thursday through Saturday.

President Roosevelt told 48 state governors to set up selective service in their states and nominate draft directors and local board members. He plans to sign rules for conscription and urged proclamations for October 16 21 to 35 year olds to register. About 400000 men will be drafted for one year of training with no pay beyond clerical support.
Martha Blake Smith 28 hanged herself from a third floor rafter in her westside Columbus home over the weekend. Coroner Edward E. Smith says she had been despondent over finances.

Four Boys Industrial School inmates were injured and captured after a stolen car crash in Millersburg. Police traced them from Lancaster after they escaped the Lan caster institution, stole a car in Lancaster, abandoned it in Lithopolis, and wrecked a second auto near Millersburg. The youths Howard Jaeck 14 William Kelley 17 Clifton Williams 18 and Harold Harrison 14 were hospitalized by Holmes County authorities.

Weekend crashes in the Chillicothe area killed four people. Don Allen, 29, of Clarksburg and Ralph Williams of Nutter Fort died when their car hit a Baltimore Ohio freight train at Slate Mills near Chillicothe. Glenn Salyer, 20, of Chillicothe died after his car struck a bridge abutment while returning from a football game. Thad McGee, 25, son of Ross County roads superintendent, died in a wreck near Hallsville. Max H. Woodgerd, 20, of Columbus was fatally injured when a car plunged into a ditch east of Columbus.
State Highway Patrolman Norman Brunn tried to stop a speeding motorist at Sunbury north of Delaware. A running gun battle carried the pursuit to Columbus and back to Delaware where the trail was lost. Brunn did not know how many shots were fired. A spotlight tag was shot from the patrol car.
