Ohio Conservation Division notes anglers head to streams for one last bass session before squirrel season opens Monday. Soft shell crayfish and worms top bait. plugs and eel catches reported at Ebridge Basin in recent weeks.
Commander Jim Horwell's harmony brigade mixed clowning with drill at the Logan-Glouster game. A band member passed out during a half. a reserve clarinetist warmed up as stretcher bearers rushed from the bench. The patient left, a substitute joined in, and the band kept marching through other drills.
Football fans slimming down may take cues from Logan High as the Chieftains trotted onto the field before the second half and performed calisthenics including an inverted bicycle drill.
Superintendent G. E. Carr announced 87 new band uniforms were purchased for Logan High School. They will arrive in about three weeks with special outfits for Drum Major Glendon Shriner and Standard Bearers Mildred Columber and Margaret Thomas. The set features white trousers and purple military coats with a white Sam Browne belt, plus a modified Pershing style hat. Uniforms will be issued to band members upon arrival.
Eight of nine Akron men were convicted or pleaded guilty on liquor law violations in a federal case involving two 300 gallon stills seized at a Canal Fulton farm. Defendants include Joseph Poth Peter Gruich Boza Mikalachki Leo Marino and others with various charges of conspiracy operating an unregistered still and illegal distillation.
Logan Commandery No. 116 plans a field day at Logan High School athletic field on Sunday October 8 marking the 43rd anniversary of the Fourth Regiment Knights of St. John of Ohio. Mass at St. John's Church begins 10 30 A M with Fr Vincent Kessler presiding. music by St. John's choir. Commandery officers include August Kessler captain J Savey lieutenant Paul A Schrader lieutenant and Francis Miller sergeant.
Plans for a banquet at Rockbridge High School gymnasium on October 4 mark the 25th anniversary of the Hocking County extension service. State director H C Ramsower and county agent James R Smoot will feature in a program reviewing 20 years of work since 1919. Extension workers since the office’s founding will be guests. public invitations stand.
Patrolman Frank P. Green was acquitted of manslaughter in the death of 23 year old Joseph Foreman after a May altercation. Green testified he fired in self defense.
Residents report the first frost in Hocking County early Friday with Logan registering 39 degrees. Only delicate flowers show effect as cold settles in rural parts.
J P Canty of Logan is in serious condition at Cherrington Hospital after a fall on Warner Avenue Thursday. He sustained a possible skull fracture and severe facial friction burns from the porch stairs incident.
Henry W. Peters aged 51 died in a three-vehicle crash in Columbus on September 22. David Du Bois of Chillicothe, driver of the truck, escaped injury.
Paris reports German attacks on French positions coincided with Adolf Hitler and Walther von Brauchitsch on the western front. Hitler has been in the field since hostilities began and was seen near Warsaw. Von Brauchitsch left Poland for the western front after previously heading the German army. French infantry repelled three separate German probes near Saarbrucken as the war shifts east and west.
London reports the british government says enemy submarines cannot sustain an adequate blockade and warns of heavy sea losses before the war ends. The Akenside, a 2694 ton british freighter, was torpedoed off the Norwegian coast. 26 crew escaped and were rescued. Britain’s merchant fleet losses reach about 35 ships.
Secretary Lawrence Grove of Cleveland said delegates at the Ohio Moose Association convention would consider a resolution urging strict U S neutrality in Europe’s war. He noted next year’s convention site to be chosen later this year amid requests from Steubenville Dayton Columbus Canton and Warren for the 1940 gathering.
The Pennsylvania Railroad called back 600 men to work to meet rising demand for freight cars. Sixty five were hired at Mingo Junction, 15 at Canton, 10 at Akron and 45 at Cleveland in Ohio.
Velma Baker Fink, 22, acquitted of first degree murder in the death of her 10 week old baby. A sanity hearing will determine release. she may be freed if found sane. The verdict came after a 10 day trial with 49 witnesses for the defense and 11 for the state.
Cadiz Ohio AP reports a $20,000 bequest awaits Miss Murial Clendening if probate officials locate her. D C Clendening, her uncle, died earlier this month. If unrecovered, public bequests are doubled and the remainder goes to the Red Cross. She last worked as a secretary in New York five years ago.
Logan firemen answered a general alarm Friday morning after a high tension wire broke and lodged on the dawn spouting above Bert Humphrey’s Fountain Street home. No damage or fire was found. the circuit energized the house lights via the outside ground connection without any switches being on.
Hunters prepare for the start of squirrel season with dawn opening Monday. Reports show variable squirrel abundance across the county and rules include four squirrels per day per hunter and eight possession after day one. They are urged to obtain permission from property owners and display licenses and tags at all times. Police warn against hunting in Logan cemeteries and promise vigorous prosecution for violations.
The Hocking County Board of Commissioners held a lengthy session on Friday discussing relief funds and methods to bolster finances. Over 200 WPA workers returned to county and state projects, saving about 1500 in relief costs. The board authorized township trustees to hire relief clients for improvement work and noted 1312 in state participation for county relief.
Charles Knece and Pearl A Knece sue the village of Laurelville and Salt Creek Valley Bank in the Court of Common Pleas seeking 1525 for alleged property damages from Sweinert Street reconstruction. They claim poor drainage floods cellars and gardens, creating unhealthy conditions and pulmonary risk, and seek 4000 for related illness. Both seek injunctions against village funds.
A proposed administration bill to repeal the arms embargo tightens a ban on American ships carrying goods or passengers to belligerents. Senate debate shows 44 favor repeal, 19 oppose, with many undecided or uncontacted. Penalties include fines up to 1000 dollars and a year in prison.
Ohio highway director Robert Beightler told Lancaster residents he would study a proposal to rebuild Route 33 north of the city. He said the road is important and should be a four lane divided highway.
Melvin Wallace of Amanda pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and was fined 100 dollars at arraignment before Mayor Dallas Kinser Priday. Conrad was arrested on North Street by Patrolman A F Byrahe. driving privileges were certified for suspension.
