A Wellston trio performed for the Kiwanis Club in Blossers banquet room. Sidonia Breene sang two solos with sister Virginia Breene, while Lois Morrow accompanied. Charles Phillips 25 of South Mulberry Street was wounded in the left shoulder Tuesday evening when a .22 Savage rifle he was cleaning discharged at the home of Margaret Nihiser in the Dicken Addition. He received treatment and was released.

A tropical hurricane hammered the Florida Keys with gusts near 160 mph and drove heavy rain and winds through Miami. The storm moved north northeast toward Lake Okeechobee with 100 mph winds at the center, threatening the citrus belt and coastal cities from Daytona Beach to Charleston. Red Cross reported 8,300 sheltering in Miami. 53,000 could be fed two days with stockpiled food.
Three Logan men were fined by Mayor Roger W. Friend after pleading guilty to offenses. Wayne E. Dennis paid $10 and costs for reckless driving. Robert Howdyshell faced $15 and costs for intoxication disorderly conduct and quarrelling after a West Main Street tavern disturbance. Fritz Hoffner was fined $10 and costs on two assault and battery counts. Complaints were filed by taxicab drivers Fred Miller and Arthur Tschudy.
Joseph S. Deutschle, adjutant of the Ohio department of the American Legion, was appointed city welfare director by Mayor James A. Rhodes. He served as an Army public relations officer in World War II and was formerly an Associated Press editor.
Glen Edwards of Marion, Ohio, 35, was stabbed in the groin during an argument in Columbus. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition. Police are holding a man for questioning.
Western Powers extended a week to Moscow on the Berlin issue as UN autumn session looms. U S Secretary George C Marshall British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin and French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman plan a joint note to Molotov and may bring the Berlin blockade to the UN Security Council if Russia is unsatisfied.

Charles Swackhammer, 25, of Laurelville Route 7, suffered arm burns when his car veered off near State Route 180 and U.S. Route 33 after a tire blew out. The vehicle struck a ditch, gas tank ruptured, and the car caught fire as Swackhammer tried to extinguish the blaze.
Alphonse Letendre, 21, admitted stealing a 40 gallon barrel of tomato pickles from a warehouse. He swapped the stash for a barrel of dills on a second trip and was jailed for six months.
New York telecommunication wage talks focus on a proposed raise up to six dollars weekly for about 25 000 employees. The offer from American Telephone and Telegraph Company arrived during negotiations and is being reviewed by the CIO American Union of Telephone Workers.

Department heads and district managers of the Ohio Power Co southern division gathered for their monthly noon meeting at Blosser's restaurant in Logan. The division covers Logan Lancaster Newark Mt. Vernon Zanesville and surrounding areas.
Joe and James Adcock co operators of the Logan Home Dairy pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to maim and were released on 300 bond each after arraignment before Magistrate S B Whitehart. The charges were filed by G A Hughes CIO international representative in Ohio for the Dairy Bakery and Food Workers Union over a September 1 street fight. The brothers had filed similar charges against Hughes who pleaded not guilty and was released on bond. The dairy has resumed milk delivery to Logan homes and stores.
McNaughton, Canada’s UN Atomic Energy Commission representative, said Russia has not yet produced an atomic bomb. He noted it could take another five years for the Soviets to develop one and affirmed Western leadership in atomic energy.
London reports the United States Britain and France stand in absolute agreement on a Berlin policy if Moscow talks collapse. Bevin told Parliament the note to Russia remains possible while warning against premature war. Officials in Paris say talks continue as they prepare a possible four power Berlin settlement.
Robert Thompson, 33, New York state chairman of the Communist Party, was stabbed and beaten by two or three unidentified men in an alley early today. A physician noted a superficial abdominal wound with bruises, and a communist spokesman called the incident a political attack. There was no robbery attempt. Thompson is among 12 communist leaders recently indicted by a federal grand jury for ties to a group advocating violent overthrow of the U.S. government.
A blaze on the sixth floor of the Hinchcliff Building on Euclid Avenue forced more than 150 apartment tenants to flee last night. Fire crews battled the flames and contained the blaze with no immediate reports of injuries.
