Israeli forces face possible retaliation after an ambush killed six Israelis on patrol, including a lieutenant colonel and a major, with four others wounded near Nablus. Israel may strike Jordan, accused of supporting Arab raiders, as tensions rise after the Middle East conflict.
Medicare patients face a 10 percent surcharge on hospital and nursing home care starting January 1. Health Secretary Wilbur J. Cohen announced the change as part of federal policy to raise funds for care costs.
The Ohio Drilling Co is installing a new pump and equipment for city No. 4 water well drilled this summer. C. M Beery, city electrician, is running power lines while Geiger Plumbing Co connects the pump to raw water lines. The contract specifies 1000 gallons per minute. The well initially pumped 1200 gpm, per Service Director James Parkinson.
Fort Wayne Indiana AP reports Red Foley died in his hotel room Thursday night aged 58. The country star rose to fame in the late 1940s with Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy and inspired generations of musicians.
In New York the stock market moved mixed in early afternoon trading with about 130 more issues ahead than behind. An Eastern Air Lines jetliner carrying 53 people was hijacked from San Juan to Miami and diverted to Havana.
Moscow AP reports Zond 5, the Soviet space probe, flew around the moon this Wednesday according to Tass. The mission marks continued Soviet space activity during the space race era with officials confirming the flyby.
About 600 North Vietnamese attacked northwest of Saigon. Allied forces killed 67 attackers while nine South Vietnamese militiamen died and 31 were wounded. Other battles south of Da Nang and in the Mekong Delta caused 24 U.S. and 16 South Vietnamese deaths with 91 enemy killed and 162 wounded total. An American pilot is missing after an F105 was shot down. U.S. pilots downed a MIG jet for the first time in seven weeks. Authorities warned of a possible Saigon attack planned for Monday, though no solid evidence supported the claim.

Judge Harley Meyer announced the trial of Sterling Lewis former chief laboratory technician at Hocking Valley Community Hospital has been moved to October 21. Earlier plans set the conspiracy to defraud charge for September 30 and possible joint trial with ex administrator John Sappington. Libby Lewis wife of Sterling is appealing her conviction and remains under probation with restitution to the hospital of 6696, tied to a Lindsay Consulting Services finding.
