Gov Lausche commuted Benjamin Meyer’s death sentence for his wife Velvia’s murder to life imprisonment. Meyer, 26, shot his wife on Feb 15 1954 amid family quarrels. the couple had five children. The Pardon and Parole Commission can review after 20 years for first degree murder, with parole for second degree murder.
Kenneth Bowman, 16, admitted killing his foster father with a gun and choking his foster mother with a knee. He reportedly burned their car to fake an accident, then confessed after hours of questioning. The Bowmans, Harold 49 and Maybelle 46, were found buried after authorities initially ruled the deaths accidental. He faces arson and murder charges and will be assessed at Lima State Hospital.

An early Sunday one car crash in Haydenville killed Harry S. Seerles 34 of Nelsonville at Mount St. Mary Hospital. The driver Michael Fiola 35 died on arrival at Nelsonville hospital after striking a guard rail and crashing into a tree. Virginia Searles and Miss Betty Parry of Nelsonville are in good condition. Seerles, a former Nelsonville officer, was a sheet metal worker in Beverly and member of local Eagles Elks and VFW. Survivors include his wife and two brothers Gerald and Fred. Funeral set for 2 pm Thursday at Warren North Funeral Home.
Dr T J Najm of Nelsonville announces opening a Logan office for general surgery starting Monday September 26. The Logan site at 201 Be Second St near Walnut intersection will host hours 4 to 7 pm Monday through Friday, with Nelsonville office maintained. He specializes in general surgery including urology and chest surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He serves on Mount St Mary Hospital staff and is chief of surgery at Gallipolis State Hospital and seeks admission to Hocking Valley Hospital.
Police investigated a two car crash at 8:25 p.m. at Main and Market. Donald E. Mays, 35, Logan Rt. 1, collided with Washington Towers Sr., 56, Logan Rt. 3, after Bowers reportedly stopped abruptly to avoid pedestrians. Damages were to the Mays car’s right front fender and bumper.
Ohio officials said a 1937 reciprocity agreement with Michigan will end Saturday and Michigan truckers must pay Ohio's axle-mile tax. The Ohio Supreme Court had nullified the tax for out of state haulers, but the latest move targets renewal. Georgia? No. The board warned 20 states of cancellations unless amended. The two sides may extend under a gentle men’s agreement.
