Firefighters responded to a blaze at the new dormitory of Hocking Technical College in Nelsonville. Workmen welding an outside stairwell started insulation fire. Damage estimated at 6 000 to 8 000 dollars. Building owned by Ralph Courter. Aerial ladder pumper and tanker along with six volunteers and four regulars fought the fire.

A Senate approved $56.6 billion appropriations bill includes a provision restricting federal funds for abortions to life of mother cases, rape, incest, or ectopic pregnancy. Opponents including Sen Edward Brooke say the measure discriminates against the poor and could be ruled unconstitutional. If Ford vetoes the bill, Congress may seek an override before Oct 2.
