In Logan Stadium 4,900 spectators watched Lancaster overpower Logan 27 to 6. Despite the weight and depth gap, Logan showed effort on defense with Boyd Wright and Eddie Wallace key on the line while Bob Fisk limited Lancaster runs. Lancaster’s Bob Carpenter impressed with speed and tackling, signaling strong possibilities for 1948.
Logan High School’s 100 piece band staged an American history motif during the Lancaster Logan football game at LHS stadium. Led by Nancy Perkins and James Horwell the group depicted early Puritans and a church scene then formed the Freedom Train and played related selections to a 4900 spectator ovation.
The state controlling board approved 576400 dollars for buying a site at the northeast corner of State and Front Streets to house a new state office building in Columbus Ohio.
Middletown Ohio workers at Aeronca Aircraft Corp receive a 10-cent an hour wage increase for 400 production employees announced yesterday.
Middleport defeated Pt Pleasant West Virginia 18 to 6. Jackson surprised Greenfield McClain 7 to 0. Wellston cruised past South Point 37 to 0. Gallipolis beat Oak Hill 35 to 0. Nelsonville edged The Plains 34 to 25. Athens routed McKell of Kentucky 40 to 0.
Logan stifled Lancaster early then blocked a punt to spark a scoring drive. Soliday broke free for a long touchdown after a reverse and key blocks from teammates cleared his path. Bail’s extra point was blocked as Logan held Lancaster to a single major and threatened again in the second quarter.
Two crashes on West Hunter Street followed the Logan Lancaster football game. Glenford Wade 23 of Lancaster hit a parked jeep driven by Fred Myers injuring an unidentified woman who was hospitalized. Wade faces DUI charges. arraignment set Saturday.
In Tampico Illinois on September 18 two sisters Mrs Minnie Parent Pope and Mrs Edith Parent Brainerd and their husbands Mr John Pope and Mr Levi Brainerd mark 50 years since their double wedding on September 21 1898. The open house will be in Legion hall in the building once the parents furniture store and upstairs home of the Parent family.
Columbus paper reports Robert Murl Daniels, subdued after his Mansfield triple murder conviction, entered Ohio Penitentiary and faced electrocution next.
United Nations official informs Israel it must assume full responsibility for the breach of the Palestine truce caused by the assassination of Count Folke Bernadotte and French U N observer. Dr Ralph Bunche cites Israeli statements as not aiding restraint and notes witnesses say the killers wore Israeli army uniforms. A Jewish liaison officer and U S Consul General MacDonald suspect Stern group extremists carried out the attack.
At Eglin Field Florida five army infantrymen were killed and 29 others injured in a live-bomb mishap during air ground maneuvers. Four victims died yesterday and the body of a fifth was found buried in a crater. Most victims were black. one officer was not. Seventy 500 pound bombs released from seven B 29s at 10 000 feet scattered around the troops during Operation Combine III set to begin September 27.
Four youths from Norwood were indicted by the Hamilton County grand jury on rape charges. The alleged assault involved an 18-year-old Cincinnati girl on August 15.
Former governor Frank Lausche told a Democratic state platform closing session he would drive pressure groups out of Ohio government if elected. He faulted Gov Herbert’s administration for surrender to “lawless elements” and vowed to fight strip mining and political influence in the state.
New Delhi reports in a brief radio dispatch that Hyderabad state troops formally surrendered to the Indian army at noon. Indian forces entered Secunderabad, six miles north of Hyderabad, forty five minutes after the surrender, following the Nizam's cease-fire order.
President Truman in a Sept 18 speech labeled a Republican victory a great danger to farmers. He attacked Wall Street money and “gluttons of privilege,” saying GOP control would drop farm prices and worse, a man-made disaster for farmers. He spoke at the National Plowing Contest during a 9,500 mile tour.
The Fairfield County special grand jury said it expects to report its findings on stolen meat sales and gambling sometime Wednesday. Jury foreman Tom Hewetson noted adjournment to allow Prosecutor W C Pickering and the court stenographer time to prepare testimony for review. More than 50 witnesses, including Lancaster Police Chief Sam Hustler, testified during seven days of hearings at the Swift and Co. Columbus plant theft inquiry.
Carl R. Bettis aged 20 of Davisville was struck and killed by a hit and run driver on the main road near Coalton. His sister Betty aged 17 was seriously injured and hospitalized after the incident reported by the Jackson County coroner. Witnesses described the car as an old black vehicle returning from a medicine show in Coalton.
On its first anniversary the U S Air Force showcased peacetime power with open houses and new weapons. Forty nine bomber flights including 50 B 29s from Japan and other bases flew non stop to 25 cities. Five B 36s toured hundreds of cities as part of the public display of air power.
