The Hocking County grand jury returned seven true bills on Monday led by a second degree murder indictment against John W. Smith for the April 6 fatal shooting of his nephew Orlie F. Smith in a Blue Creek cabin. Smith, 48, Laurelville, is held on $10,000 bond after pleading not guilty. Indictments also include Robert W. Keynes Jr. for issuing a bad check for $1,712.55 to Nau Grain Co. Urbana on March 23 and Darryl F. Bryan for drunken driving with left of center charge dropped. Four indictments names withheld pending service. Judge Harley Meyer set arraignments for Friday at 10 a.m. Grand jurors examined 12 witnesses in 16 cases, with several defendants placed on probation or sent to Mansfield Reformatory or Ohio Penitentiary. The panel urged jail improvements including a hand rail, new mattresses, wiring repairs, and repainting the sheriff’s office.
