A county commissioner's office adopts a new binder machine from McBee Co. that handles all record sizes with reinforced covers and steel pins. It drills holes and can bind loose-leaf records, potentially reducing the need for costly permanent bindings. The device is available for rent yearly and is not for sale.
All Boy Scout troops in Hocking County are invited to a Court of Honor on Wednesday at 8 P M at the shelter house in Rachelmacher Park. Scouts in band will play before business. Troop 153 opens with the opening exercises. Rev. Stanley W. Wiant to give invocation and Rev. Fr. John Eyreman to deliver principal address. Awards for advancement will be presented and troop committee members honored.
Ohio gubernatorial candidates John W. Bricker and Martin L. Davey sparred over school funding and state finances on a Cleveland radio broadcast. Davey said the Davey administration left $18 million in debt for schools. Bricker countered by claiming $6.5 million remained in the treasury but was moved to the general fund. Bricker accused Davey of vetoing millions in appropriations after inflating budgets and said no investigation is needed into his administration. The governor touted $1 million yearly savings from competitive bidding.
Wendell L. Willkie campaigned in the Democratic South against a third term for President Roosevelt. He spoke in Tulsa then Amarillo, urging limits on office occupancy to protect American democracy, warning that a third term could end the system. He stressed unity across parties and independent voters in defending liberty.
Hocking County Democratic committees finalize plans for a Saturday rally at the Court House in Logan. Former Governor Martin L. Davey will speak at 7 p m. Bands from Rockbridge Murray City Union Furnace and Carbon Hill are invited or secured. Speakers include John McSweeney and Dennis Dunlavy. The party arrives via Route 75 from Jackson.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill warns Britons invasion may come this year as German barges and ships mass for land assault. He notes a cross sea and Channel hazards while RAF strikes target barge concentrations. Berlin claims Luftwaffe activity continues.
Foreman Francis Cowly of Continental Caulking Co was burned on a church roof when a blowtorch ignited a pail of gasoline. He suffered a severe burn from ankle to knee and is in good condition at Cherrington Hospital. Fellow worker Charles Kennard helped extinguish flames. Kennard received minor burns. Fire Chief McLaughlin and the department controlled a blaze involving roof cement and chemicals.
Beverly Hills reporting McGuire a noted writer of Florenz Ziegfeld stage pieces died at age related to his stage and film work. He moved to Hollywood in 1930 writing several plays and preparing others for screen adaptation. His last project was the film story "Lillian Russell."
New York Massachusetts and Wisconsin voted in primaries while Connecticut Republicans held a nominating convention. The New Mexico Democratic contest promised a sequel as New York's 162 congressional and state races focused on the ALP split over a third term and John J. O'Connor's bid to regain a nomination. Massachusetts saw Walsh and Parkman unopposed for Senate with Dever facing Kelley in the governor race. Wisconsin had Senator LaFollette unopposed.
The Bituminous Coal Division ordered a public hearing in Washington on October 1 to consider orders requiring all soft coal producers to supply the federal government with constant information on their operations. Data about preparation cost sale and distribution under minimum prices starting October 1 will be maintained and filed for proper administration of the Bituminous Coal Act.
Mrs. Alice Wyskiver of Haydenville assumed duties this week as Daily News correspondent in Green Township day center. Her first newsletter appears today and she will report Haydenville happenings and handle newspaper subscriptions.
J G Collins and Sam Blum of the Hocking County board visited Jobs and Coalgate to locate polling places for the November election. The board announced a bid from F J Heer Printing Co Columbus for 91.30 to supply election materials for 37 precincts and set ballot print bids due by September 23 for 13 000 national state and judicial 2 000 school levy and 475 bond issue ballots. Earlier the board approved two school levies a bond issue in Good Hope district and Dr A E Person of Murray City for coroner in the independent nominating petition.
President Roosevelt signs the peacetime conscription bill and orders 16 500 000 men aged 21 to 35 to register on October 16 for possible service in a citizen army. About 75 000 draftees expected in the first call as guardsmen mobilize and defense funding rises.
Hocking County 4-H clubs will display exhibits in a dedicated tent at the fairgrounds. A style show and dress competition are planned with demonstrations by Marjory Hartman and Frances Stone. Entries must be filed by the club advisor through the county extension office before September 21.
Ohio plans to mobilize 8500 National Guardsmen by Oct 15. Registration for 21 to 35 year olds to receive one year of training at Camp Shelby Miss begins Oct 16 with forms printed and distributed by Adj. Gen. Light. County election boards will supervise. 15 000 Ohioans will be drafted from a drawn bowl.
Foreign trade experts forecast another year of war would lift U S exports to about 450 million dollars a month by next summer, doubling prewar levels. If correct, annual exports would reach roughly 5.5 billion dollars, led by British purchases of war supplies.
