London endured night raids as German bombers attacked outer districts for over eight hours while anti-aircraft defenses fired. A government communiqué noted fires were controlled and one plane was shot down near east London.
The Senate voted 37 to 33 to empower the government to seize industrial plants to meet defense orders, setting the stage for President Roosevelt to sign a bill registering all men 21 through 35. Debate on age range and a 60 day delay with voluntary enlistment followed as leaders predicted quick action.
Fred Deishlie at 581 West Front Street marks 45 years with the railroad trade. He began at Logan and worked at Upper Sandusky Fostoria Lancaster Valley Crossing and other way stations before becoming a telegrapher for Chesapeake and Ohio in Logan. He observed his 65th birthday on Labor Day.
The county auditor reported on Saturday that Margaret Orndorf will receive 3.25 dollars for killing 13 crows in Ward Township at a bounty rate of 25 cents per crow. This appears to be the only girl named as a crow killer on the records.

Plans unveiled for the Democratic headquarters in the McCarthy building to open Saturday September 21 with former Governor Martin L Davey to speak on South Market Street. Mrs Ora B Yaw to run the office under Prosecuting Attorney Hubert Lappen after a campaign meeting. Dennis Dunlavy a Supreme Court candidate also set to speak.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold a meeting Tuesday September 17 at 7 PM at Stage Coach Inn to elect officers and plan a Halloween Dance a street parade and other activities. All members are urged to attend.
Attorney General Thomas J. Herbert ruled that Columbus city education boards must contribute to the state workers compensation fund and cannot bear their own workmen's compensation liability.
Eugene Badgley aged 14 died at 4 40 A M Saturday in Cherrington Hospital from burns after a can of gasoline he carried exploded showering him with flaming fuel. He was brought in Thursday afternoon by Herbert Miller, friend of the family, who was with him near the mine while they were cleaning up after going to Coonville for a coal truck. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
County officials on Friday approved the 1941 budget totaling 317 976 34 dollars with allocations for General fund 134 821 34 dollars Bond Retirement 13 500 00 dollars Auto gas fund 116 000 00 dollars and other appropriations. Bills were approved as part of the session.
Three unmasked gunmen held up 20 people at Mutual Federal Savings & Loan in downtown Zanesville Ohio during lunch. Five employees and 15 customers were forced into a back room as the robbers loaded money from counters and a vault, then escaped in an automobile.
Three youths aged 16 to 17 fled the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster yesterday. The escapees were Robert Barnell 17 of Youngstown Richard Blair 16 of Columbiana Station and Elsworth Eldir 16 of Columbus. authorities issued a search and patrols were increased around the facility.
County school officials expect more than 500 employes from the various boards to bring their families to Rachelmacher Park Saturday afternoon for the first annual Hocking County school employes picnic. Music will be by a 140 piece county band with games and contests. Miles Graham, former English instructor at Logan High School and Ohio State University, will be the principal speaker and a picnic lunch is planned.
Two year old Herman Brandon of Lancaster died in University Hospital from infantile paralysis. The death raises Ohio’s 1940 toll from the disease to twenty.
Charles A. Rowan 65 longtime chairman of Westinghouse Air Brake Company died last night in Pittsburgh. He led the firm during critical development years and shaped its direction through a period of growth.
A Pennsylvania freight train fatally struck section foreman Raymond B. Weikert, 45, of Perrysville, as he inspected tracks in Mansfield Ohio. The accident occurred today near the yard as Weikert walked along the right of way.
Bob Showalter 13 fell from new bleachers and broke his leg. Eagle Scouts Eldon Carr and Jack Rauch prevented moving him until a physician arrived. They propped him with coats, kept him still, and ensured safe inspection, seen as proof of Scout training value.
Washington reports the Army will bolster its streamlined divisions with greater armament as defense officials push faster war material production. The War Department authorized nine manufacturers to expand plants for machine guns small arms ammunition and chemical explosives worth 170 million dollars and awarded 41.44 million dollars in contracts for planes engines and spare parts including 540 pursuit planes and 150 training planes. Export controls on aviation fuel planes and manufacturing plans were tightened with licenses required for exports. Roosevelt called the step a prudent resource measure for defense.
Ohio University President Herman G. James told faculty and students that Communists Fascists Nazis and their fellow travelers are unwelcome on campus. He urged against exploiting free speech to threaten Americanism after a request by the K T Crossen American Legion post. A local editorial claimed Communist forces had been allowed to run rampant on the campus.
Former chamber of commerce directors' secretary George M. Kearns died last night at age 56 after a long career as a wholesale dealer. He served the Ex C of C in the years prior to 1939 and was a prominent local figure.
