Leading man Paul Muni and his wife attend the Hollywood premiere of Life of Emile Zola in which critics hail his best screen performance to date.
Chinese forces abandoned the Kiangwan salient under heavy Japanese fire and withdrew to fortified trenches 25 miles northwest of Shanghai. Japanese troops moved to the eastern race course and Kiangwan civic center as the battle raged for a fifth week. Observers counted about 50 900 dead or wounded among Chinese and Japanese troops thus far.
Willis Lehman, a Logan resident and city employee, remained in serious condition today at his home on N Mulberry Street. He was struck by a car on the night of Sept. 4 while clearing a storm sewer on N Market Street after heavy rain. Driver identified as Walter Guess. Lehman had shown improvement earlier but worsened this morning and is under care of a nurse.
Hocking County Auditor W. S. Yaw has been seriously ill at home and was moved to Cherrington Hospital Saturday. He had earlier spent two weeks at Holmes Hospital in Cincinnati for observation and treatment and recently returned to his office before his condition worsened.
Hocking County WPA officials announced there is no final release yet for the Logan Board of Education sponsored swimming pool project.
The United States launches a new credit easing plan approved by the Federal Reserve Board. It permits expenditure of 100000000 of frozen gold and open market purchases of short term securities. The move aims to expand banks excess reserves and continue the economic recovery.
Police probed motive behind the east west passion as 30-year-old Chinese laundryman George Tong shot 14-year-old Alice Devine, a white schoolgirl customer, in his Brooklyn laundry and killed himself with gas. Autopsy ordered. clues include Tong’s trunk with photographs of the girl.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Warren C. Giles announced the unconditional release of manager Charles Dressen and coaches Tom Sheehan and George Kelly. Dressen will be replaced temporarily by Bobby Wallace. Salaries for the three men will be paid in full through season’s end.
Directors of the Logan Chamber of Commerce met with Council and city officials to discuss a potential compromise with Ohio Fuel Gas Co. over a rate hike. No action was taken. a compromise proposal may be introduced at tomorrow's Council meeting. Hearings on the Columbus rate case start tomorrow before the Public Utilities Commission, setting a state wide gate rate affecting Logan consumers.
A Logan delegation of ten men attended a Blue and Gray Trail Association meeting in Columbus. The group helps promote a federal highway from St. Joseph Michigan to Richmond Virginia, including Route 31 through Logan. A Logan secretary was chosen and incorporation steps were planned with a federal route number expected to be announced.
Norwalk filed with the state utilities commission for rehearing of the Aug. 31 order invalidating its ordinance on Ohio Fuel Gas rates. The commission ruled 2 to 1 that the ordinance passed Jan. 5 was improper since filed after a new rate schedule. The city argues statutes grant municipalities regulatory powers at all times.
In Youngstown Ohio Roy Happy Marino gambler and underworld figure was found murdered last Friday. Ed Schrecher a special investigator predicted the motive would be determined within 36 hours. Schrecher works with George Hurley and John Callan and Youngstown police in the probe. Funeral services were held this morning as investigators seek new clues.
Ohio conservation officials signaled a decision this week on crop damage claims totaling nearly 25 000 by Buckeye Lake area farmers after June 21 outlet gate openings lowered the lake to relieve pressure on a retaining wall. Similar Indian Lake claims were denied.
Dr J F Bateman superintendent of the State Hospital for the insane reported insulin shock treatment for schizophrenic patients has been remarkably effective. He said eight patients were treated and fourteen were discharged as apparently cured after the risky but potent therapy.
George Francis announces the sale of Candyland in Logan to Mrs. Albert Kelch and Mrs. Nellie Primmer. Francis will move to Mt. Vernon to manage his late brother’s interest in the Alcove Restaurant. Candyland closes today and will reopen later under new management.

The Associated Press reports twenty four Ohioans died in violent incidents over the weekend. Thirteen perished on highways, four were struck by trains or vehicles, and four more from various accidents. Victims include Thomas Roach of Lancaster aged 75 struck by a car, Kenneth Brenneman 17 of East Liverpool from a fall, Burt Norris 4 of Toledo from rat poison bread, Hollis Johnson 2 from a nail fall in Bladen, and 14-year-old John Phillip killed in Dayton while playing with a revolver.
Morton D. Wainwright aged 72 a former Seattle deputy U S marshal was convicted of sending a letter threatening President Roosevelt and received a one year jail sentence in Boston on September 13 AP reporting.
Albert Matheny of Dorr Run near Haydenville, an escaped West Virginia inmate from Mouldsville since March 22 1927, fights extradition as his wife seeks a divorce for neglect cruelty and infidelity and asks custody of their six year old daughter. Sheriff Farbearn confirms the escape and plans for a guarding extradition.
At Geneva, Spain accuses Italy of pirate attacks on merchant ships amid League of Nations talks. Britain and France plan naval patrols in the Mediterranean while Italy and Germany stay aloof from the Nyon anti piracy effort. Juan Negrin presided as league leaders weighed war aggression risks.
President Roosevelt closes his retreat at Hyde Park New York and plans to head to Washington tonight to confer with aides on world conditions. He ends his family stay and will consult with capital on what he calls grave issues ahead.
