Small skirmishes reported on Tay Ninh fringe with an ambushed U S convoy farther out. U S advisors said enemy forces appeared to pull back for now as 2000 South Vietnamese paratroopers and marines swept areas adjacent to the city. Fourteen Viet Cong and one American were killed, with five Americans wounded.
Soviet forces pull back from Prague Bratislava Kosice and Brno to countryside posts as airlift and police activity continue. Evacuation marks a shift from three weeks of occupation while Moscow pressures liberal leaders in Czechoslovakia.
The Associated Press reports a crisp autumn day with clear skies east of the Rockies and chilly conditions in the Deep South. The Hocking County Fair enjoyed 69 degrees at noon after an overnight low of 44, with Wednesday high near 63 and warm, improving conditions forecast for Friday.
Temperatures dropped into the 50s across the eastern Rockies to the Middle Atlantic with 60s in the Northeast and Florida. Light rain dampened parts of the Pacific Northwest spreading into California and the Rockies.
W Creighton Brashares 92 of 1647 Green Bay Rd Highland Park Ill died Sept 6 after a short illness in Highland Park Hospital. Born April 18 1876 in Hocking County he served as county superintendent of schools after leading Lancaster High School later teaching in Cleveland. Survived by wife Mary Ambrose Brashares a daughter a son three grandchildren four great grandchildren a brother and a sister. He was brother of the late Josef Brashares a former Hocking County representative to the Ohio legislature.
A two hour fire at Ger lach Chevrolet Co. auto parts storage in Versailles caused more than 75000 dollars in contents damage. Darke County fire departments assisted, and building loss remains undetermined. The cause was under investigation.
Justice William O. Douglas halted shipment of 113 Army reservists bound for Vietnam, delaying their call up after they challenged the 1966 law used to mobilize reserves without war or national emergency. The Cleveland area soldiers from Ft. Meade face a potential ruling on the constitutional delegation of power to the President.
The Senate opens debate on gun controls, seeking federal registration and licensing of firearms. A bill would curb interstate mail order rifle and shotgun sales and restrict cross state over the counter sales, with a Tydings plan allowing states to handle registration before federal action. Lancaster voters rejected a four mill operating levy and a 1.4 million bond in a special election, with 2,215 to 3,572 for the bond and 2,312 to 3,436 for the levy. The levy may be resubmitted in November, while the bond cannot occur before next year. In Ironton Ohio voters passed a 21 mill city school district levy 2,172 to 1,890, and nearby Rock Hill approved a 5.8 mill operating levy increase 700 to 600.
About 1200 hardy attendees braved drizzle and 60 degree temperatures for the 1968 Hocking County Fair opener. Mayor Merril Haney crowned Karen Dietz 1968 Junior Fair Queen. Dietz is a Logan High School senior sponsored by Future Homemakers of America.
The state aims to award contracts in October for a $25 million penitentiary in Lucasville Scioto County. State Architect Carl E Bentz planned meetings with low bidding contractors to prune alternates and meet available funds. Low bids last month exceeded the bond funds by about $2.9 million.
Vernon R. Alden, Ohio University president, announced he will resign next June to become chairman of The Boston Co. and the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Co. The move follows a seven year tenure that saw rapid campus growth as enrollment climbs to about 22,500 across all campuses with 17,300 at Athens and 4,200 new freshmen.
