President Truman bars a long Southern campaign swing citing Dixie opposition to his civil rights program. He will still appear in the region in brief trips and integrate speaking days into other schedules.
State patrol reports a collision on U S Route 33 near Enterprise between Wendell Grubb of Logan and an ambulance driven by John Wallace of Glouster while transporting a patient to a Columbus hospital. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Grubb was cited for reckless driving and later pled guilty, paying a $15 fine plus costs.
Beauties from the south west and mid west compete as 55 contestants from 43 states nine cities Hawaii Puerto Rico and Canada vie for the Miss America title. Judges will trim the field to 15 finalists before crowning the winner tonight.
Four year mystery of rubber collars on fur seals is explained by Air Force and Fish and Wildlife Service investigators. Rubber bags dropped to aid Japanese troops floated to sea, attracted pups, wrapped around necks, and later crumbled leaving collars on adult seals.
In Lansing at Edward W Sparrow Hospital doctors report five day old Siamese twin girls joined at the abdomen are thriving in an oxygen tent. Born at the hospital last Tuesday they are described as normal apart from being connected. The mother, under 30, is recovering easily and parents are Lansing residents.
The AAF All-weather Air Line finished its last regular trip from Clinton County Air Force Base to Washington D C, ending 25 months of operation without weather-related cancellations.
The Univis Lens Co and CIO United Electrical Workers accepted an arbitrator's ruling ordering reinstatement of six of 11 strikers after a 98 day strike. The decision, by Prof. Paul N. Lehoczky, comes amid tensions that included mass picketing and National Guard involvement. The union will seek positions for the six reinstated workers and the other five remain denied reinstatement.
The Army is scrapping historic harbor defense guns once guarding New Bedford Charleston Key West Pensacola Galveston and Columbia. Officials will dispose of surplus guns as soon as possible as coastal defense plans shift to mobile artillery rockets and air power.
In New York on September 11 hundreds of migrating songbirds crashed into the Empire State Building. Birds including thrushes and warblers fell to streets and auto tops as researchers from the Bronx Zoo consider light attraction and night flocks. Crandall notes such flocks can collide with tall lights.
Actress Susan Peters, paralyzed from a hunting accident, was granted a divorce from actor-producer Richard Quine after a 13 month marriage. Testifying from her wheelchair, Peters said Quine was moody and sometimes silent for days, in Los Angeles court before Judge Thurmond Clarke.
Hollywood reports Bob Hope faltered during rehearsal when a fishbone lodged in his throat after dinner. A doctor from the emergency hospital removed the bone and Hope recovered to resume his routine gaggings for the new radio show.
Military services for Sgt. Robert L. Collison 22 killed in action in France November 20 1944 were held at 2 PM Saturday at Leonard Funeral Home. Dr R B Wilson officiated with music by Mrs Walter Leonard and Madge Wright. Pallbearers named, graveside rites by veterans groups led by Richard Buntz, burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Moscow reports provisional acceptance of a four power Paris meeting on Italy’s pre war colonies. Tass quoted a Soviet note to the United States stating acceptance depends on Britain and S of the proposal.
The Agriculture Department forecasts bumper 1948 crops with total farm value around 13.39 billion dollars. Corn leads with about 3.53 billion bushels worth roughly 6.74 billion, wheat and tobacco also reach high values, rice and peanuts show smaller returns as forecasts project record output and potential price relief for consumers and livestock feed.
John Henry Klinker 90 died at 1 30 P M Friday at the home of his son in law and daughter in Logan after a long illness. A Fairfield County native he lived in Hocking County most of his life and farmed Laurel Township near Gibisonville for 64 years. He also worked 15 years for J J Snyder Mfg Co as a lawyer. He and wife Barbara Ellen celebrated their 66th anniversary February 16. Surviving are Barbara and three daughters Florence Baker Margaret Corbin of Columbus and the couple's other two sons John Sugar Grove and Homer Cleveland plus a brother George of Defiance. A son Edward preceded him in death. He was a member of Laurel Township St John Lutheran Church. Funeral 2 PM Monday Heinlein Funeral Home. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery. The body remains at the funeral home for calling hours.
Miami University began its fall term with an open Senate meeting as President Ernest H. Hahne addressed faculty and staff in Oxford Ohio.
The CIO United Electrical Workers adopted a resolution denouncing the European Recovery Program as a big business plan to boost American corporate profits. A right wing minority led by James B. Carey opposed it. The convention also denounced the Taft Hartley Act and rejected a referendum on electing national officers.
Henry Anderson of Rockbridge bound over to Hocking County grand jury on $150 bond after pleading not guilty to assault and battery. Mayor Roger W. Friend said Green filed the complaint and Anderson was released on bond. Clyde H Tolliver of New Salem was fined $5 and costs for lacking a driver license.
A man posed as a buyer and stole five loose diamonds valued at 11 000 dollars from Harrington's Jewelry Store in Columbus yesterday and fled on foot.
Berlin reports state the Soviet military administration accuses Western Allies of inciting anti communist protests. The dispatch notes violent street clashes, threats of consequences, and pushes to oust the elected anti communist city government. It also cites a German led spy ring busted in eastern Germany tied to Schumacher and American British support.
George Franklin Garner 79 retired miner died Friday morning at his Jobs home after illness since July. A native of Hocking County he lived in Jobs over 60 years, retired 10 years ago. Service 2 PM Monday at Jobs Methodist Church with Rev. Beecher Morgan officiating, burial in Dew Cemetery at Buchtel by Warren Funeral Home Nelsonville. Survivors include nine sons, three daughters, 29 grandchildren, one brother and two sisters.
The Logan Home Telephone Co reports restoration of service to 125 telephones in Logan County and nearby areas after a lightning strike damaged a 25 pair cable on Church Street near State Route 664. Repairs were slowed by locating the fault and involved underground cable damage six feet down.
