Pentagon officials estimate 20000 to 25000 more young men will be drafted this year after Congress approves the new selective service act. The 1971 total would be under 120000, the lowest since 1964 when 104500 were drafted.

The Associated Press reports Hurricane Fern drenched the Galveston area with heavy rains and flooding, spawning two tornadoes and six house fires as winds dropped from 90 to 60 mph. Meanwhile Hurricane Edith weakened to a tropical storm, moving inland toward Honduras with winds easing from 175 mph to lower speeds, prompting thousands to evacuate coastal communities near Freeport.

Testimony focused on Trustee Fred Johnson and Athens businessman Dwight Rutherford, with Rumac Inc. and the Lakeview apartment project tying to them. Jack Wallick led construction records from Hall Construction and Thomas Lloyd of Rumac also testified. Four Columbus attorneys were summoned to produce related construction documents. The panel plans to continue through next Wednesday.
