GENE MATHIAS writes on the Hocking County Fair as 4-H Club advisor. He recalls memories of fairs, marching bands and ribbons, and notes the club’s growth and ongoing commitment to youth participation and blue ribbon competition in the heart of America's heartland.
The 1975 Hocking County Fair begins at noon Tuesday for a five day run featuring a record 325 open class exhibitors up from last year. Harness racing highlights include a $4500 2 year old pace and a substantial purse increase.
The Hocking County Fair began in October 1853 in a maple grove by the Hocking River and Mulberry Street bridge, starting as a simple agricultural exhibit that drew $113 in premiums. It later added racing, midway amusements, and events, with grounds purchased in 1855 and 1887, and the present site bought in 1913.
Gates open at noon with floriculture and fine arts judging. From 1 to 4 PM 4-H booths and engineering projects judged. 5:30 PM Junior Fair King and Queen coronation in the grandstand. 6:30 PM tractor pulling contest. 9 AM farm produce judging by Granges and Open Class. 9:30 AM Open Class hand crafts judging. 11 AM swine judging. 1 PM 4-H rabbits poultry and small animals judging. 8 PM Auto Demolition Derby.
At 9 a.m. junior fair exhibits and 4-H sheep judging start, followed by open class poultry and rabbits at 10 a.m. and open class sheep at 11 a.m. Beef judging runs from 1 p.m. A pony pulling contest and parimutuel harness racing close the day at 7:30 p.m.
A community event schedule lists activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. including youth day events with a parade on wheels and Open Class beef cattle judging at 10 a.m. 4-H saddle horses judging at 10 a.m. 4-H dairy and goat judging at 1 p.m. Open Class dairy cattle judging at 2 p.m.
All Day events include Oskar the Clown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with dogs judging, followed by parimutuel harness racing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Election of fair board directors runs from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a junior fair livestock sale begins at 7 p.m.
