Hocking County saw nine traffic accidents over the Labor Day weekend with no deaths and one injury. City police investigated four incidents, including rear-end collisions on Main and Front streets. Karen Crosby and Delmar Huffman faced charges and fines, with Huffman also jailed for drunken driving after a Sunday crash.
A pair of weekend crashes were logged by the state patrol. One occurred about 2.5 miles south of the Hocking Fairfield line on Rt 33 when a southbound car driven by Robert Bingham 28 Pleasantville stopped to left turn and was struck by John Oliver Prevens 21 Columbus. Heavy damage to both cars with no injuries noted.
The Associated Press reports 22 people died on Ohio roads during the 78 hour Labor Day weekend from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight, short of a 23 predicted by the Ohio Highway Safety Department. Nationwide, fatalities topped 523 with 31 total accidental deaths. Howard Pyle praised cautious driving for keeping the toll below last year’s record.
John R. Pierce 49 longtime Logan area resident died Saturday in Chillicothe where he had lived 14 years. A salesman for Electric Chemical Co of Cleveland he earlier ran a Chillicothe hardware store and served on the Logan school board and coached at Rockbridge High School. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church Chillicothe born in Oil City Pennsylvania. Survived by wife Julia daughter Melissa Ann and son Richard both at home and brothers Edwin Bethesda Maryland and William Kirkland Washington. Funeral at Fawcett Oliver Funeral Home Chillicothe 2 p.m. with Rev Ben Judd. burial Grandview Cemetery Chillicothe.
In Coolville Athens County two male occupants were killed when their car hit a bridge at the U s 50 and Ohio 7 junction. Paul Eugene Null 18 died at the scene and Calvin Oren Baker 17 died shortly after at St Joseph Hospital Parkersburg West Virginia.
Raymond P Brown of Chillicothe died at University Hospital Columbus from injuries after a Monday crash on U S 23 near Circleville. His car struck Albert Stancil's vehicle from Clyde Ohio. Stancil his wife and three children were injured but not seriously.
In the opening skirmish of the 1964 campaign both parties volleyed on nuclear weapons control taxes and civil rights. President Johnson in a Detroit Labor Day address challenged Republican nominee Barry Goldwater on weapons control as campaigns begin in Indiana and Ohio.
Seventeen senators filed to shut off debate in the Senate on Supreme Court reapportionment as the main hurdle to adjournment. Johnson, Humphrey and Miller returned to Washington while Goldwater outlined a five year tax cut plan. Johnson spoke in Detroit on unity and prosperity while defending nuclear policy. Miller campaigned in Indiana promising tax cuts and job protection amid tariff and immigration cautions.
President Makarios prepares to head a delegation to Moscow to discuss a Soviet aid package quoted at 30 million dollars in credits and possible military assistance. The talks may condition aid on Cyprus maintaining self-determination rather than union with Greece amid Turkish Cypriot tensions and UN warnings.

Henry T. Leach 90 a longtime Logan resident and former Hocking County auditor died early Monday at Hocking Valley Nursing Home after six weeks there. He served as county auditor and deputy auditor, last worked at Harden Auto Sales. Survived by son Edward and three grandsons, funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heinlein Funeral Home with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Odd Fellows memorial service at 7:30 p.m. today.
Former Hocking probate and juvenile judge Andrew Michael Ellinger 85 of 46 Furnace St died at 6 15 a m Sunday at Hocking Valley Hospital after two years of ill health He was a school teacher before serving as judge from 1925 to 1933 He is survived by a son Harley Ellinger Logan High School principal a son Delbert of Carrizo Springs Texas two daughters Mrs Burdella Bray of Logan and Mrs Evelyn Wright of Columbus seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren Leonard Funeral Home will conduct services with Rev Willard O Drefke and burial at Sponagle Cemetery Fairfield County Friends may call at the funeral home today 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m
Police report a burglary at Stone's Bar and Grill with $3208.01 missing from the safe. Manager David Larue said two cash bags amounts and two checks were taken and entry likely came through an open rear restroom window after 11 p.m. Monday.
The Defense Department said it plans to close more military installations found unnecessary, replying to Barry Goldwater who argued Democrats closed more bases than Eisenhower. The department emphasized avoiding obsolete facilities and providing security economically.
