A special grand jury in Pike County investigates election violations tied to last year’s race. Witnesses include Probate Judge Will Acord, Democratic chairman, with claims that voters were paid three dollars. Officials search for perturbing testimony and possible campaign contributions from teachers and bus drivers.
Logan Day by Day reports that Ben Dial of Wellston and head of the Ohio Fox Hunters Association will display champion hounds at the state fox hunters meet the week of October 29. Dial’s dogs earned honors at Buckhannon with Susie named best of opposite sex, Peach Blossom leading derby matrons, and Susie winning all-age matrons.
News notes that 24 percent of Logan's elm trees are infected by Dayton elm disease first noted in 1927 in Dayton. The disease spreads across Ohio Indiana Illinois Kentucky and West Virginia with thousands of trees infected and prior outbreaks in Chillicothe. Experiments will continue to study elm virus and control methods though no cure exists and dead trees require prompt removal for safety.
Five New York City banks attach more than 30000 dollars of German bank assets in this action. Sixteen German banking institutions named defendants in the attachments, served on over 100 American banks, brokerages and businesses. Warrants issued on cancellation this week of the Lloyds agreement between German banks and the American creditors committee.
Dale Shirley aged 24 of Mill W Va was arrested by the Sheriff on Route 75 south of Logan on Wednesday night. He was arraigned before Magistrate S B Whitehart and pleaded not guilty to a rock driving charge and held on $300 bond at Hocking County jail.
State Welfare Director Charles L. Sherwood allocated 1223 dollars to Hocking County as the state's share of relief costs for July. Total allocations to 136 county and city relief units amounted to 750000 dollars. Logan's relief administration is combined with that of the county. The state may share up to 50 percent if funds are available. Actual expenditures by 87 county and 49 city units formed the basis for reimbursement, the first since the new relief law became effective.
Nelson Hovey of the Ohio Industrial Relations division orders immediate enforcement of a 1893 law requiring employers to sign wage agreements with workers under 21 and provide written proof. Inspectors will check for violations with penalties up to 200 dollars fine or six months jail. Past violations will not be prosecuted, but future noncompliance will be pursued. No written wage agreements were found in the division’s files covering laundry, dry cleaning, food and lodging industries.
