Ohio State University junior geology student Fritz Huls joined a US Weather Bureau Polar Operations team to assemble and install the world s first atomic powered automatic weather station on Axel Heiberg Island at the 78th parallel. The $500 000 station used a strontium 90 generator to power instruments that relay data by short wave radio every three hours to a nearby manned station.
