The Senate to vote on a $50 000 tax free payment for families of police fire and other public safety officers killed on duty and the House to decide on financing the antipoverty program. A $4 8 billion two year extension faces debate with adjournment hoped by month end, but October spillover possible.
Public school teachers in Philadelphia strike over extending the high school day from five to five hours forty minutes. About 13 000 teachers 5000 paraprofessionals and 285 000 students are affected as classes were to begin Thursday. The board says the shorter day is the issue while the union cites salary and class size as negotiable topics.
The nation recorded 554 traffic deaths over Labor Day weekend, with Ohio reporting 26 fatalities. State patrol logged eight crashes in Hocking County, including one fatality involving a pony, while numerous noninjury incidents occurred across central Ohio.
The Logan-Hocking County District Library board hired Mrs. William S. Miller of Glenview Heights as acting librarian and rehired Mrs. Ruth Mullens of Newark as librarian on a one day a week basis. Miller replaces Edith Poling who resigned after nine years. Her last day is today.
Arab guerrillas killed two Israeli Olympians as U S jets attacked North Vietnam's northwest rail line and radar sites. Saigon reports 130 North Vietnamese killed in ground action near Pleiku while U S air forces carried out over 220 strikes across the country.
Logan's Labor Day Fun Day at City Park featured a day long program with athletic events bean dinner and ice cream social. Midget League All Stars were routed 22 0 by the White team while other games and notable performances highlighted the day. The Lake Logan swimming beach closed for the season due to lifeguard staffing and weather dampened attendance at the lake and Hocking Hills State Park remains busy with camping at Old Man's Cave.
Logan firefighters responded to three calls over Labor Day weekend. Lightning struck telephone lines at the Robert Bainter residence on Logan Route 3 but caused no blaze. A minor awning fire at G C Murphy Co on Main Street was sparked by a cigarette. Insulation in a water heater at Theron Daubenmire’s home on Orchard Street caught fire. the tank sustained moderate damage.
A 1972 district survey of 13 counties shows citizens naming crime as the top concern at 21 percent and taxes at 20.2 percent, with other issues including inflation and Vietnam War. The poll also reports views on government power, China relations, wage controls, marijuana, and school busing.

Overnight temperatures fell into the 40s with dense fog in low areas. At 11 a.m the valley read 66 degrees under sunny skies. A forecast calls for tonight and Wednesday to feature partly cloudy skies with lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s.
Arab terrorists seized the Olympic Village in Munich during the 20th Games killing two Israelis and taking 13 hostage. Authorities and IOC officials announced a suspension of events while negotiations continued, with warnings of force if demands are not met and a memorial service planned for the dead.
Lester R. McGrath of Nelsonville Route 2 was treated and released at Mount St. Mary Hospital after a fist fight and shooting on Wolf Basin Rd. Sheriff Paul Hartman said McGrath had a gunshot wound to his right hand and a suspect remains in Hocking County jail. Further charges are pending.
Three men extracted 18 paintings including a Rembrandt landscape valued at 1 million and works by Courbet Daumier Delacroix and Gainsborough from the Skylight area under repair at Montreal’s Fine Arts Museum. They also took 39 jewelry pieces and figurines.
Logan city school district begins the 1972 73 term with more than 3,800 pupils enrolled. Teachers held an all day convocation and a morning program covered audio visuals testing programs and the new computer payroll system. After lunch teachers report to their buildings for orientation by principals. Home room lists posted for junior and senior high pupils.
