The House debated the Burke-Wadsworth compulsory military training bill with two days of general debate finished. A punch fight between Rep. Vincent and Rep. Sweeney interrupted proceedings as tempers flared during testimony on conscription.
Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons Hitler would retaliate against the United States for the transfer of 50 overage destroyers to Britain. He said there was no violation of international law and that the U.S. stay of non-belligerency remains intact as London suffers Luftwaffe raids. The Balkan scene also darkened with reports of a Romanian exile crisis, presidential power shifts, and clashes in Northern Transylvania, while British and Hungarian forces engage as the front lines move.
On January 15, 1886, twins John and Benjamin Poling were born and their mother preserved twin pickles in alcohol. Now 74 years old, the pickles remain in good condition and are shown in the Daily News office window with a photo of the Poling twins. The artifacts belong to Mrs. Herbert Blackburn of Marion Township, daughter of John Poling.
Lloyd Arnett of Gore, four years in the U S Marine Corps in China, is on a 30 day furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Lon Arnett. A family birthday celebration for his 25th is planned for September 13. He traveled from China to Yorktown Virginia and then home to Gore with Mr and Mrs Charles Bowlby of Logan driving.
Hollywood report from September details Hedy Lamarr suing Gene Markey for divorce over mental and physical suffering. John Barrymore and Elaine Barrie reportedly separated again, and Carole Landis has left husband Willis Hunt with plans for an early divorce.
Bullets today cancelled two more names from the Cummins prison break wanted list. Guards at Cummins Prison Farm shot two fugitives to death in a cabin battle between Winchester and Till ar and recaptured a third felon, leaving 11 at large.
A shot punctuated 80 mile an hour pursuit through Silverton and Norwood ends with three fugitives from Lancaster Ohio Boys Industrial School captured. The trio James Harness 17 Cincinnati Willard Abbott 18 Albion Pa Ed Johnson 14 Toledo were identified after the chase. an auto taken in Circleville was recovered by Silverton Night Marshal Charles Kilgore.
In Chillicothe Ohio a district court of appeals refused the Jehovah's Witnesses request to stop Portsmouth police from interfering with the distribution of literature. The action sought to restrain police activities pending further judicial review.
O H Cornwell aged 46 longtime Xenia police chief was appointed superintendent of the State Welfare Department bureau of criminal identification and investigation by Director Charles L Sherwood.
Thirty seven exhausted British seamen landed in Baltimore after two ships, the Blairmore and the Royal Navy sloop Penzance, were torpedoed off the Irish coast. Eight were injured and the sole Penzance survivors, burned and dazed, were aboard the Blairmore when the second torpedo struck. More than 100 shipmates were lost in the August 24 engagement.
Earl Higdon of Chicago dubbed the caveman stole Coralene Hickman’s wedding gown and urged marriage. Sergt. William Koester Jr. of the Ohio National Guard wed Coralene hours later after she learned a license had been issued. Higdon returned the dress, and Koester and Coralene finally married.
In Mexico City the Cardenas government ordered patrols of highways airports and trains amid warnings of a revolt led by Angel Trechuelo of Almazan's party. Graciano Sanchez announced 80000 peasants ready to fight in support of Avila Camacho. Trechuelo left for northern bases with 500 directors to declare allegiance to Almazan's legal government and its self-proclaimed congress.
Relief Director Everett Jacoby announced there would be no distribution of surplus commodities in Hocking County this Friday and Saturday. The Logan warehouse continued with fresh plums and pears on Thursday but the fruit supply was expected to be exhausted by Thursday afternoon.
Francis Harvey Game, aged 59, long serving general counsel and a Sun Day Creek Coal Co. director, died suddenly last night.
More than 300 farmers attended Ohio State University farms to learn new findings from state experiments on soils crops and animal husbandry. Alfalfa soybeans and hybrid corn were featured with a session on corn acreage tomorrow drawing about 350 producers and distributors. R D Lewis described alfalfa experiments noting higher meadow yields with alfalfa replacing one third of clover. D R Dodd presented promising soybean varieties while G W McCuen discussed soybean machinery.
Huge clouds of smoke rolled over a West Side neighborhood as Columbus firemen investigated a smoke bomb set off by a National Guardsman. He planted the device to observe its effects on troop movement screening.
Mrs Lola G Neal a socially prominent real estate and insurance broker pleaded guilty to grand larceny embezzlement and forgery in Gallipolis Ohio and received a sentence of one to ten years in prison.
Ohio officials weigh action after former Gov. Martin L. Davey is accused by Welfare Director Charles L. Sherwood of using old age pensioners for political ends. Davey calls the charge pure bank while the Social Security Board considers possible mismanagement and withheld funds from 1938. The board says any evidence should go to the Department of Justice.
Hocking County Extension Agent James R. Smoot and fair officers will broadcast from Columbus on WHKC Saturday at 11 45 AM. The interview will highlight the Hocking County Fair and mark the first in a fall and winter series. Fair board officers listed include Paul Shaw president William Hansel vice president Walter North treasurer and James H Barker secretary.
Maj. Gen. Gilson D. Light says the Ohio National Guard can mobilize 11 500 officers and men within 24 hours after a federal call. Guardsmen are expected to be called October 16 for a year of training.
Clarence Koenig aged 24 drowned after going for a swim in a construction pool near Lake Erie in Cleveland. The incident occurred September 5 as reported by AP.
