The August wholesale price index rose three tenths of a percent led by food and industrial materials, with foods exempt from the freeze. The overall rise reached seven tenths seasonally adjusted, the largest in six months, as the 1967 base index reached 114.9.
Hanoi Radio reports floods in the north of Vietnam have destroyed crops, washed out roads, and disrupted transport and communications. Premier Pham Van Dong says forces have triumphed over the flood and calls for mobilized effort to restore roads, boost winter crops, and aid flood victims.
Hocking Hills State Park and Lake Logan will barricade at 5 p.m. Monday with public access denied and 30 park workers terminated. Forty new rental cabins near completion, officials report, while a new manager is expected at Hocking Hills. Lifeguards laid off and swimming beaches closed. boat ramps to remain open but discouraged.
New York immigration officials opened a special inquiry to decide if Joe Cahill head of the Irish Republican Army provisional wing can enter the United States. Cahill was denied entry at Kennedy Airport after his visa was canceled by the State Department. He is 51 and planned a four week U S tour to raise money for arms. He stayed at a Manhattan immigration detention center.
William Ensign of the Ohio Youth Commission announced Gerald Novack age 35 as superintendent of the Fairfield School for Boys in Lancaster. Novack previously led Mohican Youth Camp Loudonville and holds a sociology master's degree with a strong juvenile rehabilitation background. He will earn 15600 dollars annually.
In New York prices drifted with the Dow up 0.51 at 899.53 at noon. The advances held a slim edge over declines on the New York Stock Exchange as Britain's rate cut and modest price rises in wholesale foods, raw materials and finished goods had little market impact.
Mrs. Florence Huffines of West Logan won first prize Wednesday in the 3rd annual Ohio Electric Bake-O-Rama at the Ohio State Fair. She advances as a semi-finalist for the state championship with a $1,000 prize to the winner. she earned $100 as a semi-finalist from the sponsoring Association of Ohio Electric Companies. Her original recipe Hawaiian Pineapple Pie Deluxe sparked the victory. She was also a finalist in the Ohio State Homemakers Contest last Saturday.
Humid conditions with numerous showers and thunderstorms dominated the national weather picture. Winds gusting to 50 miles per hour battered portions of Arizona as the National Weather Service warned of damaging conditions.
