John W Bricker sweeps to Ohio governor amid the greatest plurality for a governor. Unofficial returns show Democrats gaining in both the Senate and House. Senate tally 20 Republicans 16 Democrats. old chamber 27 to 8. House 18 Republicans 60 Democrats. previous 36.
Secretary Ickes submitted his resignation to President Roosevelt offering to leave his Interior Department post should the White House accept it. He said his move was to give the President a free hand for any cabinet changes after Roosevelt's reelection.
Final tabulation from Ohio general election shows Roosevelt leading for president with 142 936 votes and Bricker ahead for governor with 363 051. Other offices list margins for Burton Sweeney Ferguson Ebright Herbert Zimmerman Bettman Turner and Young with incumbents noted.
Robert S. Beightler, commanding general of the 37th Army Division at Camp Shelby Mississippi, forwarded his resignation as state highway director to Governor Bricker. He was granted a temporary absence when called into Army service.
Final unofficial returns show Roosevelt with 1 728 909 votes and Willkie 1 585 973 in Ohio. Reapportionment raises Senate to 36 and House to 138 seats. Republicans hold a working majority, but Democratic gains threaten enough votes for emergency legislation or rule suspensions. Bricker leads by 363 000 votes in the reported results.
With only two of 8 675 precincts uncounted unofficial totals Tuesday place Governor Bricker 1 818 335 and Bur ton 1 598 560 in the Senate race. Davey has 1 455 284 and McSweeney 1 454 012.
Ohio voters backed Bricker for governor with a large plurality 1 818 335 to 1 455 284 as Roosevelt swept Willkie by 142 000. Burton won the Senate seat 1 598 560 to 1 454 012 while Bricker led the presidential totals in the state. Democrats gain seats in Congress and Legislature as Republicans lose ground.
Election officials in several Ohio counties tabulated results showing most bond issues defeated while school levies passed. In Hocking County four Hamilton County bonds totaling 11.9 million were largely rejected. Canal Winchester approved a 17 000 bond for a municipal building. Falls and Rockbridge faced mixed results on local levies and school projects. Floyd Duffy led county votes with 5824, edging Roosevelt and Bricker totals. Don Feather secured a second term as clerk of courts.

H T Phillips of Athens Republican was reported by the Associated Press to have won reelection as State Senator from the 9th 14th District which includes Hocking County though full figures were not available Frank J Peavy of Marietta Democrat carried Hocking County 4510 to 4447 and Fairfield County 9931 to 9302

Governors: 17 Democrats 15 Republicans with 1 undecided. Republicans ousted 6 Democratic governors. Democrats ousted four Republicans.

Five African American workmen were crushed when a section of a concrete tunnel roof collapsed in Stowe Township. Eight men were inside. three escaped after a loud crack warned of danger. William Peay, 30, was injured. Rescuers dug out the bodies after five hours. The tunnel runs through a hill linking two communities and had been condemned a decade ago before recent repair orders.
