A freight train ran a red light at Voghera station colliding with a Riviera bound passenger express. Ninety injured, 10 gravely, and 61 dead as ambulances and police worked amid wreckage. The freight crew escaped. a station master reported signals ignored.
Kenneth Schick ley Jr., 12, of Shamokin, fell into an abandoned 550 foot mine shaft while chasing a squirrel after a brace broke. He was found 450 feet down on an old mine buggy by two coal miners, John Varano and Joe Garcia, who were lowered into the shaft to search. Billy Kreiger, 12, witnessed the incident and alerted rescuers after Kenneth disappeared during frog hunting near a Boy Scout meeting.
Twelve of the 16 living members of Logan High School Class of 1912 are expected to attend the 50th reunion as the honor class at the Alumni Association meeting. Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Sportsman precedes the 8:30 p.m. gathering in the high school auditorium.
After nine months of talks the United States and the Soviet Union remain deadlocked on a Berlin settlement. Rusk failed to win Moscow to a plan without Western troops withdrawal. Western allies split on access routes. a compromise may emerge, but real progress hinges on Soviet flexibility.
Rep. Frank W. Boykin, 77, dean of Alabama's House delegation, loses his bid for a 15th term as voters rank him ninth in a low-man-out race for eight seats. Boykin accepted the defeat gracefully saying he regrets the outcome but respects the voters' decision.
Hocking County reported a near accident free Memorial Day with only minor incidents. A one car wreck hit a house after a boy released a car from gear shift on a Mound Street incline. A deer strike on Route 33 near Rockbridge caused minor damage to a southbound car driven by Lester Snider.
Memorial Day travel produced a low overall toll with seven highway deaths in total and only one fatality occurring during the evening rush. Despite the safer outcome a number of daytime accidents still raised the toll on the holiday period.
Adolf Eichmann asks the United Nations and West Germany to intervene after Israel’s high court upheld his death sentence for the murder of six million Jews. His defense counsel said he would file appeals, including a clemency request to President Ben Zvi, though execution seemed likely.
Hocking Countians observed Memorial Day with parades in Logan Murray City Carbon Hill and Haydenville honoring war dead. Logan drew 250 plus children and scouts marching to Oak Grove Cemetery while police traffic control aided the observances.
Rev. Sherwood Carver addressed 132 Logan High School graduates at commencement Tuesday night urging wide knowledge and empathy. He warned against overprotective parents and stressed personal growth through life’s pains and joys while calling for global sensitivity to ease world tensions.

The May employment rose by about 1.4 million to 68.203 million, a May record. Unemployment fell by 227 thousand to 3.719 million, with the jobless rate easing from 5.5 to 5.4 percent as the labor force shrank compared with a year ago. The idle total is down about 1 million from last year.
