Mrs Marjorie Thompson Miners told police she had no hand in the clash between police and pickets at a Republic Steel plant in East Chicago but was arrested on unlawful assembly charges. The Steel Workers Organizing Committee protests all arrests as illegal under the Wagner act.

Three killed in Republic Steel strike riot

Chicago May 31 AP Three strike sympathizers were reported dead after a clash at Republic Steel South Chicago. Sixty six strikers and 23 police were injured. Hospitals reported additional deaths and many wounded as police and demonstrators clashed with rocks and gunfire. The riot began after a mass meeting near the plant as officers tried to halt the march toward gates.

C and C Train Kills Man at Beaumont Crossing

Thomas Love, 31, Hollister, was killed when Clarence Roby, Carbon Hill, driving toward Hollister to pick up Love's wife for a Chauncey funeral, collided with a C and C passenger train near Beaumont. Roby escaped serious injury after the coupe wreck. The train left Logan half an hour earlier. warnings were given as the locomotive neared the crossing.

In Monts France on May 31 AP reports the duke of Windsor and Mrs. Wallis Warfield kept a low profile as their wedding looms in three days. Aunt Bessie Merryman from Washington watched over Wallis during tea at the Touraine retreat as the couple prepared for Thursday.

Berlin May 31 AP All shore leaves in the German navy were canceled after a cabinet decision to take measures following the bombing of the pocket battleship Deutschland by Spanish airplanes Saturday. The death toll stood at 23 with 19 seriously wounded. ministers met in a hastily called session as a semiofficial communique demanded satisfaction and nonrecurrence of attack.

Waterworks Contract Let To Burgess and Niple

Three Veterans Remain as Hocking County Reflects Civil War

Three old soldiers in Hocking County recall the Civil War as more than 1300 local men served. Lucius Kepler of Green Township, 95 in January, fought at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, then with Sherman to the sea. The county’s first company, Seventeenth Regiment, drew 91 men under Captain Barker at Lancaster in 1861.

An Athens County woman, Pauline Gillott of Redtown, died when her car went over a bank near Candytown on Saturday.
