Hungary Premier Nagy resigns amid alleged coup
In Budapest on May 30 a Hungarian source said Prime Minister Ferenc Nagy of the Small Landholders Party telephoned his resignation from a Swiss vacation resort. The informant said Nagy was pushed from office by the Communist Party and a coup d etat was under way. Nagy would not return to Hungary. Imre Oltvanyi was tentatively named successor. Erno Minai ifyi would take Nagy s son to Switzerland. Russian charges against Nagy were delivered by Bela Kovacs, whose Feb arrest spurred a U.S. protest, marking heightened tensions.
