Logan High School commencement features Arlene Carr receiving her diploma from Superintendent Carr. James Maddox predicted Logan population boom postwar and a Hocking Valley recreation boom with parks and airports across southern Ohio. He urged locals to boost and market the valley to realize the vision.
US Navy reports on Attu Island describe Japanese forces breaking into small groups as fighting escalates in rugged high terrain. On the 19th day of the campaign American troops push along ridges between Lake Cories and Zuake Canirca, neutralizing a Japanese strong point on Fishhook Ridge while patrols probe a third ridge from Chichagof valley.
Memorial Sunday at the Presbyterian Church will recognize parents and families of members serving in the armed forces. Mrs. Paul Monks will give a brief tribute, noting her son in engineering work in Hawaii. Two grandchildren of Mrs. Marie Sprankle are to be baptized, Kenny Bontelle Bohn born in Lancaster December 18 1942 and Terry Lamont Saunders born March 30 1943.
War brief reports sharp fighting across five sectors of the 1500 mile front as Allied air forces strike in Italy and crews report heavy bombardments. UK and US forces press operations in Sicily, Foggia, Leghorn, and Pantelleria while Russian fronts see renewed blows and Attu resistance stiffens.
The Ohio Coal Conference, Inc. wrapped its 12th annual convention in Columbus, Ohio, electing Martin Singer of Hamilton as president and naming a board of governors: F. L. Alexander of Marion, John Taggart of Springfield, Herbert Forster of Toledo, B. J. Connors of Cleveland, E. J. Heil of Lima, Charles A. Eder of Akron, Carl H. Enderlin of Chillicothe, and Norval Diver of Middletown.
An honor board bearing the names of service men will be dedicated at the Ward Rural Schoolhouse in Carbon Hill on Sunday. The public is invited to meet at the C. O. F. Hall at 9 o clock in the morning. A parade led by the school band will march to the new building for services.
Transportation facilities in the Hocking Valley saw a heavy weekend as hundreds of soldiers sailors and civilians filled buses run by Valley Public Service Company. The holiday rush began Friday and buses arriving from the north Saturday morning were full. Standing room only for most morning runs. Officials expect the situation to continue through Tuesday as crowds return to northern Ohio cities.
Dr. Fred K. King a renowned pediatrician in Canton dies here at an advanced age. The exact age and full details remain unclear from the fragmentary report but the obituary notes his prominence in local medicine and community service.
James A. Maddox of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce spoke at Logan High School commencement for 117 graduates on future U S youth. He predicted postwar advances include airplanes and television while urging patience tolerance and fair spending for peace. He noted the world is at war because nations failed to live by the Golden Rule. Continues on page two.

Elmer E. Blazer, 70, retired publisher of the News at near Larue, Marion, Ohio, died yesterday after a long illness. He was a longtime figure in local journalism and community affairs.
General Landrum reports eight days of fighting on Attu with no Japanese prisoners taken yet as troops breach Massacre Pass and hem in the main Japanese force at Chicago valley. He credits Navy air support despite bad weather and notes recoveries from exposure.
Washington May 29 Congress leaders push rapid plans to accelerate the home front war effort under Byrnes. Proposals include compulsory manpower control, a civilian supply agency with equal say to the Army and Navy, and consolidation of civilian war agencies with staff cuts. Byrnes vows full responsibility to formulate policy and direct operations.
State highway patrolmen today guarded one million No. 3 ration books, the first received here for shipment to civilians starting June 7, as the rationing system moves closer to operation.
Columbus May 29 The 95th Ohio general assembly convened January 4 for a expected three month session and sped toward adjournment after nearly five months of work. Lawmakers planned to recess until June 8 the sine die date. Speaker William M. McCulloch of the House, of Piqua, told reporters he intended to set out 24 tomato plants today. The 94th assembly quit.
Allied planes roared over the Channel toward northern France as RAF and fleet air arm crews pressed a weeklong air offensive. Reports say six Albacores attacked a fleet of torpedo boats near the island, damaging three, with air activity continuing through the night.
Carl C. Leebrick, Kent State University president since 1938, announced trustees did not renew his contract. Board chair John R. Williams said Dr. Raymond Clark, psychology professor, would become acting president on June 15.
