John R. Burson a 33 year old Canton man convicted of the April 8 1948 terror spree was executed in the Ohio Penitentiary at Columbus. He prayed with his Catholic chaplain and onlookers noted his calm demeanor as guards strapped him in the chair.
County sanitarian Hugh Chute introduces the Grade A milk program in Hocking County. He explains that Grade A is the minimum standard, what Grade B and C mean, and how labeling and public education aim to improve milk safety and sanitation.
Detroit May 28 Thirteen hours of all night peace talks failed to settle the Ford strike as negotiators adjourned at 9 25 A M EST and scheduled a second session for 8 P M EST. The dispute centers on two issues the choice of an arbitrator over manpower on assembly lines and the disciplining of 35 Ford workers since the strike began.
In Cleveland on May 28 Judge Samuel H. Silbert admonished a Browning divorce case couple to stop acting like children after both offered hostile testimony. Mrs Browning aged 33 sought to enforce a temporary alimony order while her 56 year old husband accused her of petty vandalism during their troubled marriage.
Robert L. Ripley, 55, creator of Believe It or Not cartoons, died of a heart attack at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. His secretary said he had felt unwell and went to the hospital for a checkup.
The Izaak Walton League clubhouse event tonight is postponed until next Saturday. Dr. C F Rauch announced the Townsmen from Lancaster will play for dancing with monthly events planned thereafter.
Washington police recovered thousands of bras, panties, slips, and girdles yesterday and arrested a man described as having a peculiar hobby of hoarding such items.
Three crashes occurred on Hocking County roads last night and today. Wilmot Vermillion, 34, of Logan Route 3, suffered facial and head cuts when his northbound car hit a southbound truck driven by Douglas Rowland, 43, of Dayton on U S Route 33. Vermillion was admitted to Hocking Valley Hospital. A 1930 Dodge belonging to John Bond of Springfield burned after leaving the road on State Route 328 near Hocking Hills golf course. Bond escaped injury. A second Route 328 collision near Logan involved Lee Harden, 22, of Union Furnace colliding with a rear of a truck driven by Harry Hardesty, 39, of New Plymouth. both cars were badly damaged.
Two Hocking County drivers from Bremen were injured in separate crashes on State Route 37. Wayne E. Van Sickle and Patricia B. Kessler were treated at Lancaster Hospital after their cars left the road. In a second incident Thomas Anderson collided with a Bremen motorcycle ridden by John Sharp. Harold Eads and James Ready were admitted for lacerations.
Funeral services for Dr. James Pearl Shaw 36 died Monday at his Newark home were held at 2 PM yesterday at Roberts Funeral Home. Dr R B Wilson officiated with pallbearers Dr C F Rauch Walter Lavey George C Shaw Carl Swern Frank Van Voorhis Irl Phillips. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.
The nation marks its 81st Memorial Day with prayers for peace and tribute to fallen heroes. President Truman urges divine guidance for world peace as wreaths are laid at Arlington Cemetery and in Paris London and throughout cemeteries nationwide.
The first degree murder trial of Dr. Robert C. Rutledge Jr. in Cedar Rapids Iowa is expected to go to the jury today. County attorney William Crissman may delay closing until he calls at least one more witness. Rutledge 28 is accused of fatally stabbing Byron Hartman 29, an aircraft engineer, in a hotel room last December 14.
The First Community Church of Columbus will dedicate its new camp in Marion Township at 4 30 P M Sunday. Participating will be Dr Roy Burkhart the church pastor and Todd Tibball Columbus architect who designed the lodge and cabins. The lodge and a five acre lake stocked with fish were built by William Loomis Son of Logan.
The Ironton city council approved a 94000 appropriation to improve water mains and resurface U S Route 52. The action was taken at last night’s meeting in Ironton Ohio.

Washington reports the National Labor Relations Board ruled the United Mine Workers union shop clause tied to taft hartley act violations. The clause forces all miners to join or be fired, lacks required noncommunist oaths and financial filings, and the board said the union had no right to threaten strikes over it.
In Paris on May 28 Western ministers Acheson Bevin and Schuman approved a plan to unite Germany while excluding the Ruhr region. The blueprint calls for Bonn style constitutional adoption for all Germany except Ruhr and for Russia to accept the western occupation statute or a similar arrangement. A four power session to discuss the plan follows.
Sam McCready of Ireland defeated Willie Turnesa of Elmsford New York 2 and 1 in the 36 hole final to claim the British amateur title in Turnesa’s loss in Portmarnock Ireland on May 28.
