Major Logan Fire Destroys Two Main Street Buildings
A major blaze gutted the Gabriel and Christman buildings on Main Street Tuesday evening, causing unofficial damage near $100000. Firefighters from Logan aided by Nelsonville and Sugar Grove crews battled the flames, containment assisted by rapid alarms and water pressure issues at a pool site. One resident, Mrs. Margaret Gabriel, escaped unharmed as several businesses, a hotel and apartments were damaged or destroyed.

Police identified the victim as Mrs. Mable Clarkson 51 a native of Washington D C and longtime New Orleans resident. The housekeeper was found murdered in an apartment in the French Quarter indicating she was slain about two days earlier.

Metal Plates In Windows Helped Save Adjacent Block
Fire damaged the Rempel-Wasson building and Brandt's restaurant while smoke and water caused damage. Sun Glow Furniture Industries had installed metal plates in three west side windows facing the Gabriel building to prevent fire from the frame wall. The plates turned color from heat but did not allow flames to breach the wall, possibly saving the rest of the block.
