Federal mediators see little chance of settlement at Portsmouth as Davey calls in National Guard officers to study the situation and protect workers during the strike.
Amid a four day old strike at Wheeling Steel Corp in Portsmouth Ohio, national guard officers were dispatched to assess protection needs as sporadic clashes injure over twenty workers. Federal conciliator Pilkington called the stalemate likely to persist for days while Richard Evans of the Amalgamated Association vowed no concessions.
Logan theatre goers and Rogers Memorial Fund backers are collecting contributions this week at the Chakeres Logan Theatre. A Rogers Memorial Sketch featuring Bing Crosby, Irvin Cobb, May Robson and others is on screen to encourage gifts for a memorial at Saranac Lake, New York.

Dr. F E Townsend and two pension leaders defied a House investigation by not appearing for questioning. Chairman Bell called John Kiefer of Chicago and the Rev Clinton Wunder of New York. neither answered as the hearing opened.
A House investigating committee prepared to act against Dr. F. E. Townsend after he walked out and refused to testify. Chairman Bell called a closed meeting but could not indicate likely action or whether a decision would be made. Townsend said he would not return unless under arrest.
The Ohio senate met to take up relief issues while the house prepared to convene tomorrow afternoon. Members agreed last night at skeleton sessions to resume relief studies and consider stop gap legislation aimed at providing relief until July 15.

Richie Bittinger son of J Freer Bittinger speaker of the Ohio House was released on bond after serving two days of a 10 day jail sentence for drunken driving. Release followed a motion for a new trial and a Monday hearing was set.
Milo C. Runnion, 35, manager of the Trianon ballroom, was killed when his car crashed head on into a street railway work train in Toledo early today.

147 Jehovah's Witnesses were confined in a jail built for 84 after door to door petition efforts to condemn Mayor James C. Gold for shutting their school. They were fined five dollars each plus costs after one night. One man read part of the U.S. constitution.
President Roosevelt called a White House meeting for 8 p m with Democratic members of the Senate finance committee to press for major tax reforms. Chairman Harrison was unable to attend due to illness, and the panel has yet to agree on a revenue bill near Roosevelt’s target of 620 million dollars in permanent funds plus 517 million in temporary funds. A subcommittee voted against including a proposed half cent per pound sugar tax, which would have added about 66 million dollars and helped meet the president’s revenue goal.
Dr. C. A. Griffey former superintendent of Lancaster Ohio schools was named president of Central Normal College in Danville Indiana amid a broad admin shakeup. Trustees accepted the resignations of Dr. Waldo S. Wood and other officials. Griffey has served on the college faculty.
The state liquor board considered whether selling advertising signs by Brewers and distributors to beer retailers violates the law prohibiting such donations. Board member Wellington T. Leonard said signs were reportedly sold at ridiculously low prices.
Amos Quebec May 26 AP Six men died when a Canadian passenger plane crashed in Northern Quebec near Chibougamau Lake. Investigators were ordered to probe mysteries surrounding the Sunday disaster as the wreckage was found about half a mile from the lake. The plane was returning to Rouyn after inspecting northern mining properties and all occupants were killed.
The Ohio Supreme Court may decide by July 1 whether about 12 million dollars in rate refunds are due to thousands of Ohio Bell subscribers. The court plans to issue decisions before the summer recess, with hearings ending June 19 and at least one ruling following June 24, possibly July 1.

Investigators also revisit six carloads of vigilantes near Noon estate and reopen the Howard Curtis murder case near Milford.
In Jerusalem on May 26 ARAB JEWISH clashes escalate as British forces try to restore order after 40 days of violence that left at least 50 dead. Two engagements occurred with Arabs numbering around 200. Sir Arthur Wauchope warned terrorists that the mandate would be fulfilled.
