Joel D. VanAtta, 77, a retired farmer and Hocking County native, died Saturday May 10 at Loma Linda Hospital California after a weeklong illness. He had lived in Juneau Alaska before moving to California. Survived by wife Sara Mae three sisters Mrs Jacob Wolfe Mrs Ella Pratte of Logan and Mrs Tate Wood of Bremen and brother S. S. VanAtta of Ada. Burial was in California.

Five people were killed and two injured when a Wright Field four engine Army transport C-97 crashed four miles east of Dayton Ohio during a routine test flight.
