A May report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows April manufacturing jobs down 140 060 and total non farm employment off 358 000 amid a mixed economy. Farm work rose about 500 000 while construction lagged with modest gains and housing starts fell below last year's April level.
A 31 year old mother of two was shot to death on a Brooklyn street. An hour later the shooter, a 41 year old mother of three, admitted the killing saying the victim was running around with her husband. The shooter was taken into custody after being identified by police.
The telephone industry asked Congress to repeal the communications excise tax as part of the 1948 revision. They claim ending the levy on telephone, telegraph and other services would save taxpayers about 400 million dollars. The excise is described as a necessary business and social service tax, not a luxury levy.
The House marked up a Navy appropriation bill totaling 3.47 billion dollars, 11 percent below Truman's budget. The measure cleared with no major changes and cleared debate in a single session as lawmakers prepared the next 1948 supply bill for the Agriculture Department.
The White House announced President Truman will sign the 400 million dollar Greek Turkish aid bill at a ceremony in Missouri tomorrow.

In Columbus Ohio on May 21, state police reported two men robbed Continental Bank at Continental Ohio of $1,000 and were captured on the Maumee River bridge in Toledo at 12:45 PM. They fled in a stolen car. officers identified two suspects but names were not released.

Thousands are expected for May 22 28 with 850 commissioners and moderator election as the first major action. Candidates include Dr Robert B Whyte Wilbur La Roe Jr and Dr John H Gardner.
Thomas T. Endicott, credited with the idea that led to Atlantic City's Miss America pageant, died last night in Atlantic City New Jersey.
The League of Women Voters of Ohio started a three day convention in Columbus as the first full postwar conference. Delegates from across the state gather to discuss civic issues and voter participation.
Upper Sandusky residents recalled the all night frolic staged by School Superintendent Charles E. Davis and parents to deter post prom mischief. From nine to midnight the town hosted the event followed by open houses and a sunrise breakfast. The next day commuters faced fatigue as memories lingered.
Hocking County remains without a coroner as Dr. H G Southard health commissioner declines the post citing full time duties. The position pays 150 a year rising to 400 in 1949 and officials warn the board may cancel the appointment. Laymen cannot serve under state law and physicians may be paid per required service if no coroner is found.
Logan Board of Education seeks free water for the swimming pool this year and asks the city council to provide water without charge at 7:30 P M next Tuesday. The board warned that without free water the pool admission prices may rise. a city ordinance now prohibits water without meters.

The event accompanies a Rotary Club sponsored horse show at the fairgrounds drawing riders from southeastern Ohio. Clarence Blosser donates the facilities and the restaurant staff volunteer to serve.
Police consider Oliver Calvert of Belpre Ohio as a possible identity after a man reported missing left a note and a belt buckle marked C. The body, found in a tarpaulin covered box in Ravenswood cemetery, drowned in the Ohio River and was then set ablaze. The investigation centers on the note and Belpre connections.
Diana Guance 30, a former waitress, faces assault charges after she slapped a pie into Chris Costas, operator of the Ritz Case, in Jackson Mississippi. She said the act was soul satisfying and planned for several days.

Seven soldiers were killed when an Army B 25 crashed in a farm field during a violent electrical storm. The wreckage lay scattered about 16 miles north of Champaign Illinois after the plane departed Cheyenne Wyoming en route to Chanute Field.
Three escapees were recaptured in Huron Ohio by state highway patrol after fleeing Osborn Prison Farm Sunday. Robert Hosier of Xenia Paul Bennett of Cincinnati and Michael Sinkovitch of Youngstown were jailed yesterday. Two fugitives remain at large.
About 3,800 foremen walked off the job at Ford Motor Co at 10 A M with Rouge and Lincoln plants reporting first impact. Highland Park unit unconfirmed. Foremen's Association of America Ind ordered strike and company gave no immediate comment. A later statement was promised.
