The administration trims a 3.8 billion foreign aid request with a shift toward loans and development funding. Eisenhower will radio TV appeal Tuesday and Secretary Dulles leads hearings Wednesday with a Senate panel to review the proposal.
France's Foreign Minister Christian Pineau arrived at the United Nations to protest Egypt's sole control of the Suez Canal and press for a renewed operations plan. He said the UN should declare the de facto situation non final and pursue negotiations between Egypt and canal users. Pineau aims to gain U N approval of the six principles and seeks a Western unity front ahead of a possible council vote and Russian veto.
Democrat Paul M. Butler blamed President Eisenhower's Middle East plan and the budget fiasco for delaying Congress. He predicted Democrats will carry a good record, citing a stronger party and more youth involvement after the Democratic National Committee meeting. Butler said the press remains mostly Republican but is splitting, reducing Ike’s image as a super president.
A national Parent-Teacher official argues that so called art and culture magazines are sold to youngsters in big cities much like narcotics pushers. She cites imported comic size mags priced up to a dollar as a lure and urges homes to foster good literature and cultural aims to curb delinquency.
The Logan Chieftains placed sixth in the Southeastern Ohio Class AA District track meet at Ohio University. Gene Morgan qualified for state with a second in the 440 and a tie for third in the high jump. Marietta won with 64.5 points, Ironton edged Portsmouth for second, and Lancaster close behind.
A Boys Industrial School escapee was captured after breaking into the Claude Carrell store at Buena Vista. Deputies Rhein scheid and Morrison investigated the burglary, finding glass entry and theft of cigarets candy and about $10. The boy slept in a junk lot car before being found near the Hocking Fairfield county line with over $9 cash.
Nelsonville Greyhounds win the Class A District track meet at Ohio University with Wayne Dixon and Bob Young scoring 31 2/3 points. Dixon claimed the broad jump and tied for first in the high jump while Young tied for first in the high jump and took second in the 120 yard high hurdles and the 180 yard low hurdles.
Dave Thorne of Carbon Hill receives a presidential citation for 15 years on the Hocking County Selective Service Board. Col. Harold L. Hays and state office staff present the award in Columbus. Thorne also served on the county school board for 25 years and the Logan Hocking library board for five. His wife, a longtime Ward Two teacher, plans retirement this school year.
Mayor Francis Myers announced a special City Council meeting for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss all immediate problems including improvements in the Glenwood Addition.
Charles Epstein, operator of the Arcade Shoe Store, bought the two story building at 66 E Main St adjacent to his shop for 25600 at public sale on Saturday. Epstein will keep tenants City Loan and Savings Association and Sigma Phi Gamma occupying the premises. The sale transferred from the Elizabeth Sophia Jewert estate.
Cairo announces national assembly elections set for July 3 Egypt's first parliament since 1952 dissolution under King Farouk regime. President Nasser outlines vote as a milestone for the republic and regional stability.
Workers at Natco six Ohio tile and brick plants voted 285 to 230 to accept a two year contract with hourly pay boosts of five cents each year. The pact retroactive to March 1 includes insurance adjustments, three holidays the first year and six in year two, plus adjusted pay rates. Voting occurred at Haydenville Diamond Ault Waynesburg Magnolia East Canton and total tallies were reported in Zanesville.
Funeral services were held in Los Angeles for Alida Hyman 74 sister of Mrs. M. H. Cherrington of Logan and former Hollywood resident. She died in a cottage fire that destroyed her home where she lived since 1942 after the death of her husband Dr. Jacob Hyman. The couple moved to Hollywood around 1920 where she used the stage name Dorothy Dale and appeared with Tom Mix and D. W. Griffith. She had a role in Foolish Wives (1922) and in the original Ten Commandments (1923). Funeral was at the Church of the Little Flower Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs Gail Calvin Union Furnace was appointed part time probation officer in Hocking County Juvenile Court announced by Judge Rhea Banger Brown. She succeeds Mrs Lucy Harper who resigned May 15 after about a year in the role. Calvin, former postmistress, has teaching and cottage parent experience and is a Hamden High School graduate.
Four auto accidents occurred in Hocking County over the weekend. A 19 year old from Columbus escaped injury when his northbound car rolled after hitting gravel near Logan. A Haydenville man was cited after a left of center crash near Rt 33. A two car collision on Rt 33 north of Logan caused moderate damage and a $10 fine for failure to maintain a safe distance. Several minor incidents were logged in Logan and surrounding areas, with one fatality in Fairfield County and another in Jackson County.
The AFL CIO executive council declared Dave Beck guilty of gross misuse of union funds and permanently removed him from AFL CIO office. George Meany said Beck’s post as AFL CIO vice president is vacant and that the council may name a successor from any AFL CIO member in good standing. Beck can appeal to the AFL CIO convention next December in Miami.
